Description
Ethel Leginska, née Liggins, born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, April 13, 1886 - died in Los Angeles, USA, February 26, 1970, was a pianist, music teacher, composer and conductor. Studied in Frankfurt, Berlin and Vienna in 1900 with Theodor Leschetizky and James Kwast, performed in Europe under the name Ethel Leginska by 1906. She ended her performing career in 1926 and turned to conducting, composing and teaching. In 1925 she conducted the New York Symphony Orchestra, later in Bosten and Los Angeles, founded the National Women's Symphony Orchestra in New York and served as director of the Chicago Women's Symphony Orchestra. In 1940 moved to Los Angeles where she set up a studio and taught music.
29 cm British Pathé 5364 ( vertical cut, hill and dale ): Liszt, Hungarian Rhapsody No 13 / Moskowski, Waltz in E major op.34 No 1. Matrices E67524 and 67525, recorded 1919. Condition: 3 / 3, light greying.
A rare record, not listed in the book "Vertical-cut Cylinders and Discs" by Victor Girard and Harold M. Barnes, 1971.
Grading:
1 = mint, never played on gramophone, is not used
1-2 = top copy, no traces of use - virtually as new
2 = excellent copy, few light non-sounding rubs/marks
2-3 = light traces of wear (rubs/marks), very light greying and/or light scratches, non sounding blemishes
3 = a good average copy with more noticeable rubs and marks; light greying, few light scratches possible
3-4 = more traces of use, sonic wear from light greying. An inferior average copy, light scratches possible
4 = some sounding wear, heavier rubs and marks, scratches possible
5 = obvious sounding wear, heavy rubs, marks, scratches. An unsatisfactory copy.
