You are looking at an ethnic Spanish Mexican 78rpm phonograph record by world renowned Yucatan artist Guty Cardenas (his full name was Augusto Alejandro Cardenas Pinelo), a.k.a. “El Ruiseñor Yucateco” (“The Nightingale from Yucatan”).

Description:  

This phonograph by the famous Yucatecan troubadour Guty Cardenas was recorded in New York in November 1928.  Even though this artist had a very short life, “Guty” is a national icon and legend up to this day because of the extraordinary quality of his compositions and performances in film, on radio, and on recordings.  In 1927, he won second place in the first National Contest of the Mexican Song. The piece "Cancioncitas" is a duet with singer/movie star Nancy Torres on the second voice harmony.  Torres appeared in many films, including the “The King of Jazz” (1930).  The second song, “Serenata,” is a duet with baritone singer and guitar player Carlos Renán Cámara Zavala (“Chalin”), who performed on many of Guty’s recordings as his second voice and guitar.  However, this song only features the legendary voice of “The Nightingale from Yucatan.”  These are two fine neoclassic Yucatecan trova examples, sung with sensitivity and inspiration.

Condition:  VG+ (Good).  Mix of heavy rub wear with surface noise, along with the usual background hiss and occasional pops.  The record has a very small rim chip on the Serenata side around the five o’clock area, which does not affect play at all.  Labels on both sides have filing label stickers from previous owner (please see pictures).

78s Grading:  I grade items visually, noting any defects such as scuffing and scratches, rim chips, or flakes, and hair or lam cracks.  In addition to the visual grading, I also offer a brief description of the overall sound quality as I hear it on my record player and sound equipment.  I do not use any state-of-the-art digital audio restoration software that removes hisses, clicks, pops, and crackles.  Those sounds are “natural” in many 78s as they were recorded (by acoustic or electric means) and pressed with technology developed in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

As many avid collectors know, many of these 78 rpm discs are extremely rare, hard to find, and in many cases may be unique examples.  Thus grading them with a letter or number is beside the point.  Recognizing that these recordings are exceptional, I was just lucky and happy to find a playable copy, no matter in what condition I found them, and I hope you will be too.
