EVA TAYLOR
With Louis Armstrong !
Now here's a rare gem that combines blues, with an all star hot jazz band! This one's from Eva Taylor and she was involved in music from the time she was a child, touring as part of the vaudeville act Josephine Gassman and her Picaninnies. She got to New York in 1920, and settled there, playing the usual Harlem clubs. While there she met the very well connected Clarence Williams, and soon they were wed.
She made her first recordings for Black Swan billed as 'the Dixie Nightingale.' She cut many records for Okeh and Columbia this one is a tremendous meeting between her, her well connected husband, and some of the biggest names in the new hot jazz field.
Song here are backed by the Clarence Williams' Blue Five which is a pretty legendary group featuring Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Charlie Irvis, and Buddy Christian.
The session for "Pickin' On Your Baby" is from a session in New York City on January 7-8, 1925
The other side is "Cast Away" which is from another NYC session on March 4, 1925, featuring Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Charlie Irvis, Buddy Christian, Buster Bailey and Don Redman (I know it's more than five!).
This is Okeh # 40330
