SHORT BIO

The Everly Brothers were not only among the most important and best early rock & roll stars, but also among the most influential rockers of any era. They set unmatched standards for close, two-part harmonies and infused early rock & roll with some of the best elements of country and pop music. Their legacy was and is felt enormously in all rock acts that employ harmonies as prime features, from the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and legions of country-rockers to modern-day roots rockers like Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe.

"Bye Bye Love" began a phenomenal three-year string of classic hit singles for Cadence.  The harmonies owed audible debts to Appalachian country music, but were imbued with a keen modern pop sensibility that made them more accessible without sacrificing any power or beauty. They were not as raw as the wild rockabilly men from Sun Records, but they could rock hard when they wanted. Even their mid-tempo numbers and ballads were executed with a force missing in the straight country and pop tunes of the era. (Source: allmusic.com biographer Richie Unterberger).

Prior to producing their best hits on the Cadence label, the Everly Brothers had a single recording session with Columbia in November 1955.  Four songs were recorded but, only "The Sun Keeps Shining" b\w "Keep A' Lovin' Me" were released. There was really nothing there to set it apart from other singers from Appalachia.  Only the vocals showed any promise. The little airplay that the records received was from deejays that knew the family.

This is Columbia #4-21496

CONDITION

Vinyl: Grading is by visual inspection only.  I’d rate it barely VG.  For reasons that escape me, this 45 has seen considerable play.  There are some surface scratches, and having played it on a turntable, I’ve found that there are “static”-like sounds periodically throughout.  There are no “clicks”, and it plays through just fine.  The B-side has a chip – nothing is missing; the chip is raised slightly from the plane of the remainder of the rim.  It still plays.

Labels: The labels are also quite worn as can be seen from the scan - there is no writing, stickers, cut-out marks, stamps, or drill holes.

The 45 will come in the sleeve shown in the scan, and will be shipped in a mailing carton specifically designed for shipping 45s, or in a “sandwich” of two layers of heavy cardboard securely taped on either side of the 45 or 45s.  The protection afforded to your 45 with these four cardboard squares is at least as good as the protection afforded by the specially designed mailer.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  I have collected over 800 45s over the past several years.  My intention was to mat them with signatures of the artists that produced them.  I have 476 autographs of pop, rock, blues, country, and R&B artists to go along with these 45s.  I now find that the project is too grand, and I’m getting too old to pull it off.  When I purchased these 45s, they were the best that I could buy off of eBay and/or GEMM at the time.  I only took the cream of the crop.  Since I was going to mat them, I was interested primarily in their visual appearance, particularly the label.  I didn’t even have a turntable.

I started selling these and other 45s a couple of weeks ago, and was disappointed in how, in too many cases, the prices realized for the 45s in great condition were the prices I remember “beater” copies selling for.  Folks, with perhaps but a couple of exceptions (because nothing better was available at the time) these are definitely not “beaters”.  I can’t let them go for $0.99 like many did in the first batch I put up for bids.  I can get that without going to the trouble of posting them on eBay.  My prices for the better quality 45s will now be elevated some, but even at that they will represent a decent bargain.  The 45s of lesser quality, and those without picture sleeves will open at $0.99 as before.

BE SURE TO CHECK OUT MY OTHER AUCTIONS FOR THE AUTOGRAPHS OF THE ARTISTS WHO CUT THESE 45s.  THE 45 AND THE AUTOGRAPH WOULD MAKE A GREAT PIECE FOR YOUR WALL.

COMBINED SHIPPING – High shipping costs have always been a pet peeve of mine, although sellers have explained to me that the cost of doing business has escalated significantly, and that they’ve been stiffed so often by buyers that they’ve been compelled to hike shipping costs and to require delivery confirmation.  Since I’m new to selling, I’ll start with the fees listed below, and see what happens. (Please note that the fees for multiple items apply only to buyers who’ve requested, in advance, that I hold items they intend to bid on so that a single one-time payment for items won within a seven-day window can be made).

Insurance, if desired, will be additional.  I can’t, and won’t be responsible for lost items.  The USPS is what it is.

NOTE:  I’ve been told that Italy, Spain, and other countries do not provide the best postal service, and that delivery of items can take several weeks.  I have no personal experience with this at this point, but my foreign buying friends, please keep this in mind if and when your patience begins to wear thin.  I can only assure you that I’ll mail your item out in a timely way.  I cannot assure you that you’ll receive it in a timely way.

PAYMENT: Payment is expected within 10 days of auction's end. If payment is not received, and you have not e-mailed to explain the delay, negative feedback will be left and a non-paying bidder claim will be filed.

ALL SALES FINAL! –  In talking with other sellers, I’ve been told that, when it comes to audio media in any form, it has become all too commonplace for buyers to rip or record the material  they like, and then want to return the item for a refund.  Under this circumstance, it would be impractical for me to adopt a “satisfaction guaranteed” policy.  Look – I’ve been involved in over 3000 eBay transactions as a buyer and have a perfect feedback record even for those years when it really meant something.  On those very rare occasions in which I’ve encountered problems with others, matters were easily resolved without resorting to a third party.  Life has enough hassles without getting jacked around by people on eBay.  If I’ve screwed up – missed a huge flaw in my visual inspection, sent the wrong item, etc., I’ll make it right, but otherwise no returns on audio media please.
