Early Hendrix, ‘Electric Ladyland’, Track Records stereo vinyl LP, Nude cover
‘Electric Ladyland’ is the third and final album by "The Jimi Hendrix Experience": Jimi Hendrix (guitar and vocals), Noel Redding (bass and backing vocals) and Mitch Mitchell (drums). First released on ‘Track Records’, a subsidiary of Polydor, in October 1968 in the UK. It had been issued a month earlier on Reprise in the USA.
This double album is the fourth pressing of the five Track pressings issued in the UK. As indicated in the photographs above it comes with the infamous gatefold hi gloss cover, laminated inside and out, with the one piece front/back spread of ‘naked ladies’ photographed by David Montgomery.
As with all early UK and some European issues, Side 1, Disc 1 is designated ‘A’ and side 2 ‘D’. Side 1 of Disc 2 is labelled ‘B’ and Side 2 ‘C’ see images above. The vinyl has the significant 'hand-etched' changes to the wax matrix. Disc 1 is ‘613008’ suffixed by ‘A’ and ‘B’ on sides labelled ‘A’ and D. On Disc 2 side ‘B’ is ‘613009 A’ and on side ’C’ the stamped number is covered by a series of hand etched crosses preceded by a hand etched ‘613009 B‘.
The outer laminated jacket
As the photographs clearly show the imprint of the record is clearly evident on the front and rear of the jacket. There is also wear and tear at the corners of the cover’s spine and cracking on the front in the lower right hand side. This is largely because the lamination on all “Track issues is poor” so “ 'perfection' is an unlikely find - until the improved process on Polydor issues”. The inner paper and polythene sleeve
Apart from a couple of minor creasing at the corners, the inner paper and polythene sleeves are intact with no tears or splits.
The Vinyl
This record could not be described as in ‘mint condition’ nor has it been professionally cleaned. As the photographs clearly show there are scratches and surface marks on all four sides of the records. But perhaps unsurprisingly as they are made of 180gr vinyl, these do not have a significant impact on the quality of sound produced.
Also, the LP’s four black and silver ‘Track’ labels are clean with only slight evidence of wear around the spindle holes.
Prior to the decision to sell, these disks were played on a Steepletone 3 speed vinyl turntable record player (model ST918) at full volume. All four sides played without any irritating noticeable repetitive clicking or sticking. Apart from the odd click here and there audible between songs, all sixteen tracks played without interruption with nothing that detracts from the quality of the music being reproduced.
To reiterate, this record could not be described as in ‘mint condition’ and I have tried to identify its flaws as fairly and honestly as possible.
Nonetheless, despite its age, it is in remarkably good condition, plays beautifully and reproduces as intended the music of musicians who are masters of their chosen craft. It will make a worthy and much valued addition to the collection of blues/rock fans and collectors alike.
