Earth 2 by Earth.

or Rating:

Performer Notes: Earth: Dylan Carlson (guitar); Dave Harwell (bass).
Additional personnel: Joe Burns (percussion).
Recorded at Avast Studios, Seattle, Washington in August, 1992.
On EARTH 2, Earth (named after Black Sabbath's original moniker) offers a gorgeously dense, crushingly heavy rumble that is aptly subtitled "Special Low Frequency Version." For much of the record, the only instruments are Dylan Carlson's guitar and Dave Harwell's bass. The only other noises present are amplifier feedback, some electronics, and only the most marginal of percussion--very subdued drums, and a gong around the 18-minute mark of the last track. This kind of music acts as a black hole, absorbing all other sounds in the room, incorporating them into the listening experience.
Nearly 75 minutes long, EARTH 2 has only three tracks--"Seven Angels," "Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine," and "Like Gold and Faceted." The first is the closest to traditional rock music, featuring actual notes and a recognizable, if improbably drawn-out structure. The second incorporates electronic squelches and a modicum of bass notes. The third, and longest at over 25 minutes, is a spectacularly sustained drone that is strangely soothing. After listening to it, the initially amusing comments on the jacket--"I can almost touch the sounds" and "My tension headaches have disappeared," among others--seem perfectly appropriate.

Professional Reviews: Alternative Press (4/93, p.59) - "...EARTH II is the coolest thing ever associated with riffs of metallic origin..."
