Description
Up for sale is a very rare Edison Diamond Disc record featuring two great songs from the Roaring '20s (Jazz Age).
Artist: B. A. Rolfe and His Lucky Strike Dance Orchestra Label: Edison Record Record Number 52548 Date: uncertain, but possibly 1928 (see discussion below) L-Side: 52548-L (19113) "Hellow Sweetie" (Fox trot with Singing) (Bob Schafer - Joseph A. Cirina) The faint wax matrix mark on this side reads: -19113-B-1-2 R-Side: 52548-R (19114) "Dance of the Paper Dolls" (Fox Trot with Vocal Chorus) (Tucker - Schuster - Siras) The faint wax matrix mark on this side reads: -19114-B-1-2Benjamin Alan (B. A.) Rolfe (1879 - 1956) was born in Brasher Falls, New York, the son of a music director. At an early age, he played piccolo and cornet in his father's band, touring the East Coast and Europe. After a stint as a musical clown in a traveling circus, he joined the faculty of the Utica Conservatory of Music. But he then returned to show business. In 1914, he became a silent movie producer, with an output of over 50 films. In 1921, he left the film business and re-established himself as a musical performer. He worked with Vincent Lopez. According to the Wikipedia article on Rolfe's life, in 1926, he formed his own orchestra, that was billed as "B.A. Rolfe (Trumpet Virtuoso) and his Palais D'Or Orchestra" It was not until 1928 that he was recording under the name that appears on this record: "B. A Rolfe and His Lucky Strike Orchestra". (COMMENT: IF THIS IS TRUE, THEN THIS RECORD WOULD BE A VERY LATE EDISON DIAMOND DISC, SINCE THE COMPANY CEASED ISSUING RECORDS IN 1929.) During the 1930s, Rolfe was the leader of the Goodrich Silvertone Orchestra and played on radio broadcasts (e.g. Believe It Or Not, on NBC). During World War II, he organized an all-female orchestra that performed patriotic songs.
