Description
Super-Clean copy of this 1972 studio album from Elton John.
Released on DJM Records in the UK, this was Elton's 5th studio album and was widely recognised as his best work to date. It was the first of seven consecutive US Billboard No 1s,
Named after the French chateau where it was recorded, the album was distributed extensively worldwide and it has been re-issued and repressed heavily over the years across all formats.
This is one of the original 1972 UK pressings and features the characteristic vinyl compound that appears black, but shows up as translucent red when held up to a strong light source.
To nail any myths, these red copies (sometimes referred to as "secret reds") were not "special" or "limited editions" in any way. It was simply a feature of PYE Records' manufacturing process in the 1970s. (Their procurement division probably acquired a massive quantity of PVC pellets that happened to have this colour feature.)
PYE also did a lot of contract-pressing for other record labels at times of unusually high demand, which is why occasional non-PYE albums also show up with this feature. (Queen, Beatles & Joy Division being notable examples)
Naturally, it's a feature that affects collectors and sometimes they are advertised as special or secret reds.
Later re-issues of this album contain an extra track and are much more likely to be stock-black copies.

Vinyl: Ex - Super-clean copy with only very light superficial hairline surface marks. Play-tested and reproduction is still fantastic. Standard black DJM company labels with silver label text and yellow logo and rim-text. (The first letter "A" in the "Chateau" title is accented on the label.) labels are clean, free from scuffs stains and blemishes and carry some signs of spindle-wear.
Sleeve: Ex - Great condition for its age. Sepia effect portrait picture on a textured gatefold sleeve. Rear cover shows panel photos of Elton and what would become his regular road band, plus album credits. Inner gatefold has printed lyrics. Print finished by Garrod & Lofthouse. Structurally sound with no splits, tears or creases. Spine still very solid.
A lovely original UK pressing of an early Elton John album. Not particularly rare - plenty of copies out there.
