Trading the cinematic aspirations of Tumbleweed Connection for a tentative stab at progressive rock, Elton John and Bernie Taupin delivered another excellent collection of songs with Madman Across the Water. Like its two predecessors, Madman Across the Water is driven by the sweeping string arrangements of Paul Buckmaster, who gives the songs here a richly dark and haunting edge. With most songs clocking in around five minutes, the record feels like a major work, and in many ways it is. 

The album peaking at #8 on the US Billboard Top Pop Albums and placing at #10 on the year-end list of 1972. It received Gold by the RIAA in February 1972, achieving $1 million in sales at wholesale value just in the United States. In 1993, the album was certified Platinum, representing shipments of more than 1 million units in the US. In 1998, the album was certified Multi-Platinum, representing shipments of over 2 million units in the US.

• Mint (M): Superior Quality – Super clean flawless vinyl, usually unplayed. 

• Near Min (NM) t: Near perfect, super clean, possibly unplayed. 

• Excellent (EX): Very minor flaws, Very clean vinyl and labels with perfect sound quality. 

• Very Good Plus (VG+):  A used copy with more obvious signs of superficial wear that does not affect sound quality. Very Good Original sound and reasonably cared for. 

• Very Good (VG):  A used, reasonable copy. There will be obvious signs of wear and light surface noise in spots.

• Good (G) or Good Plus (G+): Record: Will show considerable wear and tear, with surface noise and scratches. May also be slightly warped but should not skip. ?Jacket: May suffer from spine splits, discoloration/heavy ring wear, writing, or sticker damage.

• Poor (P) and Fair (F): Record: The album is still playable, but with heavy scratches and surface noise and may possibly skip.Jacket: The front and back may be torn, stained, ripped and have major writing or tape marks.
