Elvis’ Christmas Album ~ LOC 1035 Original 1957 First Issue w Gold Spine
Label: Orange Rigid (Deep Groove)
Vinyl: VG
Cover: VG++
Indianapolis Pressing: "1S" / "1S"

Further Details

This is a beautiful cover of this fantastic package.  The cover is a strong VG++.  The only flaws are a small tear at bottom on last insert page and also at the bottom of the inside of the back cover (please see pics). The spine has the gold lettering and is completely intact without any tears or fraying.  Just a really nice piece.  The record has some marks and scuffs and is visually graded as VG.  The cover, however, more than makes up for this.

Items of Note

Side 1 contains some of the best non-traditional Christmas songs of all time, while Side 2 contains two traditional Christmas songs and four gospel songs (which was Elvis’ favorite genre of music).

There are so many stories about the songs on this album.  In his “Comeback Special” in 1968 Elvis introduced “Santa Claus is Back in Town” by saying it was his favorite Christmas song “of the ones [he] did.”  He forgot some of the words, however, and the song was spliced out and replaced with “Blue Christmas” following the aforementioned introduction.  As for that most famous of his Christmas songs, evidently Elvis did not want to record “Blue Christmas.” Most likely out of respect for its earlier artists.  Elvis was told he was obligated to record it, and finally agreed.  But, as the story goes, he tried to sabotage the recording in little ways hoping it would never be released.  The background “woo-ooh-ah-ooh-ooh’s” with Millie Kirkham and the Jordanaires were intended as such.  Instead, the song became one of the biggest Christmas songs of all time.

I personally absolutely love Elvis’ version of “White Christmas”. Irving Berlin, who wrote the song, did not feel the same way, and even tried to get it banned from the radio.  That has always struck me as odd, however, since Elvis’ version was based off of Clyde McPhatter’s version (the Drifters) from 1954.  I always wondered why Irving Berlin objected so vociferously to Elvis’ version, but had not objected to the Drifters version three years earlier..

A Little About Me

I first became an Elvis fan in the fall of 1976 and received my first Elvis record for Christmas that year (from my uncle - it was a tan label "Live at Madison Square Garden" - because my uncle liked the song "Never Been to Spain"). I am selling some of the records from my collection in hopes that they may bring as much joy to other Elvis fans and collectors as they have to me.
