I am a 45 year collector of LPs and 45s. All of the LPs I have listed on eBay are from my personal collection.
In 1996 when RCA initially put together this compilation of Elvis hits from 1956 it was not released in the LP format in the US.... only as a CD. It was pressed on vinyl only in Germany in very limited quantities. In 1996 there were not many LPs being sold in the US or anywhere else.
I purchased this LP in 1996 when it was imported from Germany by a few audiophile dealers here in the US. I played maybe 4 or 5 songs from it once when I first purchased the LP. I have all of Elvis' original US LP pressings so I have all this music on RCA original US LPs. Other than a one-time play of those few songs this LP has sat in my collection for the last 20 years. The vinyl and labels are as new.
The jacket is a gate-fold jacket and I have graded it M- due to a hole in the rear panel of the second half of the gate-fold jacket. This is how I received it. There is also a similar hole in the inner sleeve. This had to occur when the package was being put together because the vinyl is flawless.... unmarked. Other than this flaw, the gate-fold jacket is flawless. There is no storage wear, ring wear, or splits. It has been stored in a polyethylene sleeve in my collection for the last 20 years.
There is a 22 page 12 x 12 booklet with this LP. The booklet is in the first half of the gate-fold jacket and it is flawless. It is mostly beautiful black and white photos of Elvis from The Alfred Wertheimer Collection. I believe the Wertheimer collection of photos of Elvis are the best, and easily the most important, ever taken of Elvis. Wertheimer was an independent photographer in the 1950s and in January 1956 he was asked by RCA to just follow Elvis around and take pictures. He did so from January - July 1956. During those early days of his career, Elvis was not The King of Rock N Roll. He was not well known outside of Memphis and the south and he was certainly not a star at that time. There were no crowds of adoring fans and Elvis was free to go wherever he wanted, usually alone. Wertheimer just followed him everywhere taking pictures. None of them were staged or posed. Wertheimer just snapped photos as Elvis lived his day to day life during those 6 months.
After the July 2 - 3 recording sessions in New York when Elvis recorded Hound Dog and Don't Be Cruel; Elvis, Wertheimer, and Colonel Parker took a train back to Memphis. Elvis was scheduled to do an outdoor concert on July 4 in Memphis. After that concert neither Wertheimer nor anyone else ever got close to Elvis again, other than his immediate family and his close friends that came to be known as the Memphis Mafia. The Colonel had finally gotten the price he wanted from Ed Sullivan to do 3 appearances on Sullivan's show and Parker didn't want Elvis over-exposed to the public. The Colonel requested that all of RCA's publicity photos and files be given to him, which RCA agreed to, and the Colonel then personally controlled all publicity regarding Elvis. A curtain came down around Elvis regarding photo ops and publicity. Wertheimer's photos are the only ones that show Elvis, not as a star but as a young man of 21 living his life before the beginning of unimaginable stardom.
