Elvis Presley – Self Titled 3 Record 45 RPM EP Set with Cover – SPD-23 - 1956

Back in 1956 the 1 Percenters were given a very unique opportunity.  RCA developed a very special 45 RPM record player.  They called it the “RCA Victor Elvis Presley Autograph, Automatic 45 Victrola Portable Phonograph”.  And for those who could afford something that unique and special, there was a little extra incentive.  They were given this three record 45 RPM EP set as a promotional item.  There was also a second promotional item at the same time, which was the two record set.  It was offered with a different Victrola that was a little more affordable and did not include Elvis’ name and autograph.  Neither of these sets was ever available in stores.  I don’t know how many were sold, but this is clearly an incredibly rare set.  These sets appear on the market very rarely, and I’m honored to present this to you.  It is the three record set, released on RCA Victor in 1956, number SPD-23.  The set is all original and all in stunningly beautiful condition, especially given that it is now over 60 years old.  The three 45’s still have their bright original luster, though with a few light scratches that do not significantly impact play.  They play with just light sporadic background noise and a few small tics and pops.  The sides are numbered for stacking purposes, with side one backed by side six, two by five, and three by four.  There is some red ink on the side one label logo.  The other five sides have clean labels.  The vinyl grades VG.  It’s the cover that just is almost shockingly gorgeous.  The three part cover is tight and solid.  Other than a tiny scrape in the middle of the record two section there are no marks or splits on any of the seams.  The spine is still so tight that the only way I could take photos of the inside of the cover was by holding the sides apart.  There is a small red ink mark on the top of the side two side of the cover.  Otherwise all five sides are clean.  There is just a bit of age discoloration.  That iconic cover photo also appeared on Elvis’ historic RCA debut album, number LPM-1254, though the track lists are quite a bit different.  The cover grades a strong VG+.

Grading Information

I only use four grades in my grading:  NM, VG+, VG, and G.  The only exception is a sealed album which is presumed to have vinyl in mint condition.  My NM grading means that the vinyl looks and plays as though it is the first time out of the sleeve.  The VG+ rating is used on any album that plays great but has one or more small defects.  It may have a pop here and there or some occasional background static.  On a VG album you can expect that, typically, this album will play great, but you’ll see more defects on this than your VG+ rated album.   Most often the VG rated album may even play well enough to be graded VG+, but the color or blemishes drop the grading.  Likewise, you may occasionally find an album that looks almost NM but the sound quality just isn’t there.  That’s why I play every record first, because this does happen.  In this case the vinyl will be graded VG.  Very occasionally I will list an album with a grade of G.  This is one where I consider the collectible value of the album to be great enough that the copy being presented is worth having as a filler copy.
