I sell vinyl records with complete honesty and reliability. Above all things I am a record collector and music lover. I only sell records that I would want to receive. I know well the disappointment of receiving an over-graded record that turns up two weeks late. That is not the service you will receive here, so bid with total confidence. I don’t sell a lot of records because I spend a lot of time carefully finding, grading and listing them and do not like to rush this process, as many sellers must do to be able to sell 100 records a week!


I am mostly a collector of old time music, pre-war blues and folk, so buy job-lots that often contain rare records that aren’t to my taste so to eBay they go!

So here we have a stunning example of a 1st pressing of EL&P seminal record Brain Salad Surgery with 1st press gated opening sleeve, 1st press lyric insert/poster and original advertising inner sleeve.  This whole package was only offered at the very beginning of the run and was quickly changed to amend certain details.

The rear of the sleeve shows Manticore spelt incorrectly as Manicore as only the very earliest presses did and equally the stamped SRC code is present.

All this and the best bit being that the record looks unplayed with a perfect audiophile playback!

As an added bonus, I have included the very rare 45 in very good condition that came out at the same time as the record with the same gated front sleeve!

Brain Salad Surgery is the fourth studio album by progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1973 and the first under their Manticore Records imprint. It features cover art by controversial artist H. R. Giger. Per the 1996 re-release notes, Manticore Records president Mario Medious "nicked the title from a slang lyric in Dr. John's 1973 hit, "Right Place, Wrong Time" (released January 26, 1973)": Just need a little brain salad surgery/Got to cure this insecurity to replace the working title, Whip Some Skull on Yer!!!!!

The most well-known track is "Karn Evil 9 - 1st Impression, Part 2" (Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends...). "Karn Evil 9" was so long it originally had to be split between sides 1 and 2 of the album. The original U.S.CD release also divided the piece, but subsequent releases have presented it in an uninterrupted version!!!!!.

The lyrics were co-written by Greg Lake with fellow ex-King Crimson member Peter Sinfield. On the instrumental "Toccata", based on Alberto Ginastera's 1st piano Concerto, special synthesized effects were produced not only by Keith Emerson but by Carl Palmer using newly-developed drum synthesizers. Ginastera's agent apparently did not care for ELP's rendition and wasn't going to clear the publishing rights; however, Ginastera himself liked it a lot and arranged for clearance. "Toccata" also gained fame as the theme to the New England cult TV show Creature Double Feature!!!!!.

The band had initially wanted to release "Jerusalem" as a single, but discontent from the BBC prevented these plans from materializing!!!!!.

"Karn Evil 9" includes vocal credit for Keith Emerson, and is Emerson's only official vocal credit on an ELP record!!!!.

Sleeve Condition.

The original gated opening UK 1st sleeve is in lovely condition. The sleeve opens beautifully, housing the record and insert on a slide out and the hinges are perfectly connected and strong There are no rips, stains or splits to mention. The colours are still vibrant and clear. There is only some mild shelf wear to corners to mention really and some mild ringwear to rear. The edges are still nice and sharp and the spine perfectly eligible. A really nice example of this often battered sleeve!

Inner Condition.

What makes this album so rare to find is the original Atlantic\Atco advertising record sleeve Please note that Manicore was a subsidiary of Atlantic\Atco these original covers are only ever found on the earliest pressings only! The original 1st press Atlantic/ATCO advertising inner is equally in near perfect condition. There are no rips, stains or splits to mention. I don’t think this has ever housed the record which is in a polylined inner thus it is in great condition.

Insert Condition.

The 1st presses came with this diecut insert which fold out to show lyrics and artwork and it is in lovely condition. It has no writing and has never been pinned so remains flat and straight. There are 2 little nicks to an edge to mention!

Label Condition.

The custom labels are simply perfect with no rips, writing or hold damage. Under a strong halogen only one ghost spindle can be seen. I reckon this record has been played only once or twice at most!

Vinyl Visual Condition.

The record itself looks perfect on eye inspection!  It still retains its factory shine and lustre and looks as new. Under a halogen, only the slightest of removals can be seen, not a hairline in sight. Newly pressed magic!

Vinyl Audio Condition.

The record sounded perfect from start to finish.  The band sounded well defined with excellent clarity throughout!  I heard no pops, skips or distortion. It’s a beautiful sounding record that will not fail to please and I hasten a guess that you would never find a better 1st press!

So, there we have it. A superb true 1st press of this rare record with a stunning 1st press sleeve, complete with insert and 1st press inner AND a copy of the 1st press 45!

Records will be sent in defenda-box mailers which are strong corrugate cardboard boxes ensuring that no bending can take place. They are in essence bomb proof!

Records will be sent housed in new poly-lined inners outside of the sleeve to protect both the sleeve and original inner

I hand clean records with Clear groove and a microfiber cloth, however, if you use your own system or machine and would prefer I didn’t, then please ask.
