In celebration of legendary prog-rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s 50th anniversary, BMG are releasing ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ as a limited edition Picture Disc vinyl for Record Store Day 2023. Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound and one of rock’s first super-groups. The world-conquering, stadium-filling prog giants helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions and were one the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s. Brain Salad Surgery is one of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's most successful and well-realised album (after their first), and their most ambitious as a group, as well as their loudest, this album was also the most steeped in electronic sounds of any of their records. The main focus, thanks to the three-part "Karn Evil 9," is sci-fi rock, approached with a volume and vengeance that stretched the art rock audience's tolerance to its outer limit, but also managed to appeal to the metal audience in ways that no other of their albums did. The album reached #2 in the UK album charts upon its release and #11 in the US and has since attained Gold certification in both countries. The artwork was designed by the one and only H. R. Giger, famous for his art direction and design on the Alien film franchise.
