ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This wonderful LP – a superb collector’s copy – from EMI (C061 11637, French Pathe-Marconi pressing, gray/white microsillon label – FA2, mono) features the incomparale George Enescu in truly mesmerizing performances of Chausson’s Poème for Violin and Piano in E-flat Major Op. 25 (dedicated to Eugène Ysaÿe), recorded on 19 April 1930 with pianist Sanford Schlüssel, and Enesco’s own Violin Sonata No. 3 in A minor Op. 25, made with his wife, the splendid pianist Celiny Chailley-Richez, on 19 October 1948.
This is exalted music-making by any measure, revealing the miracle that was Enescu in full glory, and all those who cherish the art of the violin will find this issue endlessly enjoyable. What’s more, the transfers are extremely fine, well capturing Enescu’s distinctive timbre.
Incidentally, the fine liner notes on the reverse side (in French only) are by Michel-R. Hofmann.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. The jacket is still largely in the shrinkwrap, “sealed” except at the open edge. There is some minor bumping at corners and some mild discoloration to the shrinkwrap, but that is all. The album is without seamsplits, or owners' markings and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and handsome in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is similarly near-MINT. It should be noted that the surface noise you might hear stems from transfers of the original 78rpm recordings and not from the condition of this LP, which is a lovely collector's copy.
