Description
England - Garden Shed (Arista 1977)
This is an original UK first pressing of the rare progressive rock debut album from Maidstone-based band England, active from 1975 to the early 80s, and who reformed to tour and record new material from 2005. This is a starter copy for reasons I’ll go on to explain.
First, the positives. The laminated sleeve is in very decent condition overall. Slight bend to one corner, some minor spine/edge creases and 2cm rub wear to the centre of the bottom edge. Overall VG++ to Excellent.
The labels are clean with no writing or major wear, just a touch of spindle wear on Side 1.
Matrices are correct for a genuine UK 1977 first press with 4-U numberings, and MASTER ROOM / A PORKY PRIME CUT in the runout.
Side 2 plays through fine with no jumps or skips. There is some background surface noise noticeable in quieter sections and a few tics caused by a mark at the beginning of track 3. Overall side 2 grades VG to VG+.
On Side 1 some clown has carefully (!) and deliberately carved a star shape across tracks 2 & 3 rendering them basically unlistenable, unless you like constant tics and pops. Heartbreaking and baffling.
A malicious sibling? A spurned girlfriend or boyfriend? Who knows?
Track 1 plays OK with some background noise and grades VG. So overall, Side 1 is Poor to Fair.
So, starter copy/collection filler only.
Who’s going to bid on this?
Maybe someone who needs a decent sleeve for their copy?
Maybe someone who has a repress and wants an original, just for the collection?
Maybe someone with a magical cure for scratches?
Or someone who wants a budget copy to enjoy at least some of the music?
Up to you. Anyway, I’m starting it at 99p with no reserve and it goes for what it goes for. Good luck!
