Bach's unaccompanied cello suites have produced numerous famous performances, but Enrico Mainardi's (1897-1976) interpretation stands on a separate level. He prioritized structure, breathing, and space over flashy emotions, and revealed polyphony on a single cello.
This box is a 4LP set containing his stereo recordings from 1963-64 for Germany's Eurodisc. It has great historical and musical significance as the only complete stereo recording left by Mainardi.
A slow tempo, a meticulous blend of minimal vibrato, legato, and détache, and long-winded phrasing create a musical interpretation of the silence between melodies. The sound captures the subtle texture of the cello with the spatiality and three-dimensionality unique to stereo, and even today, it exudes an architectural clarity and spiritual tranquility.
The booklet includes a new commentary and a full interview from immediately after the recording, revealing his approach to music and his philosophy of interpretation, further deepening the appreciation.
