East Village are held in very high esteem by a select band of people who know classic songwriting when they hear it, but very few people have heard this record. It shares East Village's slightly plaintive, almost melancholy edge, a similarity that shouldn't really be surprising, since the two bands consisted of exactly the same members, namely Paul Kelly, Martin Kelly, John Wood and Spencer Smith. After making this record, the band changed their name to East Village, signed to Sub Aqua, released a couple of singles, then moved to Heavenly (home to St Etienne of course), releasing an album, and one further single. (The Summershine label of Australia also issued two singles and a very scarce singles compilation CD; there was also a flexi issued on Bob Stanley's Caff label; and more recently a single issued in 1993). Paul Kelly is now the main man behind Birdie, who have issued a couple of well-received LPs (with Debs from Dolly Mixture on vocals), but for me, it is when these four lads from High Wycombe got together that something special happened.

Regarding condition, this is not a perfect copy, or anywhere near. If you take a look at the definitive East Village web page (http://www.indiepages.com/eastvillage/bio.html), you will read "Of the 500 copies originally pressed, nearly all were destroyed in a flood at Percival's Belsize Park HQ."... I'm guessing that this is one of those copies, since the outer sleeve has obviously been wet at some point, and has the resultant moisture wave to prove it; there is also a tide mark showing (visible - if you hold the sleeve at the right angle to the light - as a difference in the texture of the cardboard), presumably indicating where the sleeve was submerged to (I'm guessing that the rest of the sleeve's moisture wave is from water that has soaked up through the sleeve from this submerged area). There is also some general overall wear and light creasing to the outer sleeve. The glossy inner sleeve does not show such a pronounced moisture wave, although there is some foxing visible on the inside of this inner sleeve (obviously the matt side of the cardboard stock), which is consistent with it having been damp at some point. Regarding the record itself, it looks to be in great condition, and one would imagine would play to an Excellent grade, however there is constant surface noise which is apparent, especially where you would imagine (ie on the run-in grooves, between songs, during quiet bits etc), so despite bits of it indeed playing as Ex, I would be happier calling it Very Good.

So then, overall I'm going to give the outer sleeve a grading of a low VG, the inner VG+ and the disc VG. Note however that the further away you get from mint, the harder it is to grade objectively which is why I've gone to such lengths trying to describe the condition here. Regarding the outer sleeve, I reckon it might be worth soaking it in water then drying it out whilst pressing it flat... but I'm not brave enough to try it...!
