From Riverside Records (RLP 12-248), this is SEVEN STANDARDS
AND A BLUES by ERNIE HENRY QUARTET, an original monaural
high fidelity pressing from September 27, 1957, recorded at Reeves Sound Studios,
New York City; it was released later that same year.
General Comments:
A few spindle marks on both sides as if each side played once through to record.
Playing surfaces appear NEAR MINT or better with high gloss suggesting no groove
wear.
Side one looks NEAR MINT and plays about same throughout with the following comments.
Fewer than half a dozen gentle clicks during the piano solo, cut two, o/w very quiet with
perhaps another three soft clicks later on side one. The sax is clean and bright, showing
absolutely no distortion in the dynamic passages and none even when the listening level
cranks up significantly. The rhythm section is also clean -- no thrumps or thuds from
the bass and none of that pfft noise surrounding lower tones. The piano is bright w/o
being too shiny and thin.
Side two also appears NEAR MINT and also play-grades the same all the way through.
Cut one has very low surface noise at the beginning, then settles down nicely after a few
seconds. The bulk of side two is as clean and clear as it is free from distortion -- maybe
2 or 3 random soft clicks and a wisp of surface noise like a cloud, here one second, then
gone. Even when Ernie turns it up to an alto squall, no distortion happens.
Summary Comments:
There's a lot of air in this performance, that is, the instruments are beautifully separated
not only by the near-perfect high fidelity effect courtesy of Riverside, but also by some
exemplary playing by the artists. Each member knows exactly where all others are at any
given moment in the compositions. That's hard bop -- lean, spacious, intelligent. A rare find
in this condition; our highest recommendation. You'll never find a better original!
