Erykah Badu’s 1997 debut, Baduizm, established her as the undisputed champion of left- eld R&B. She’d eventually be crowned QUEEN OF NEO-SOUL, but she was making vocal spiritual jazz that you could feel and move to more than anything. And, in a short three years after Baduizm’s release, Badu’s follow up would stretch even those boundaries. It’s 1998. After accolades, tours and the birth of her first child, Erykah Badu is working on new music; writing here and there, while at home or traveling. She began recording a few tracks in Dallas in 1999 and, by early 2000, when the project really began to take shape, she decided to move things to the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York’s Greenwich Village. It was one of the few remaining studios that could give her the warm, analog sound she wanted, but, more than this, it was a place that would allow her to experiment – to refine and create simultaneously. Badu brought with her keyboardist and sometime collaborator James Poyser. Soon, she would enlist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and bassist Pino Palladino—who were at Electric Lady at the time, finishing projects with Common (Like Water for Chocolate) and D’Angelo (Voodoo)—to work on the project. Over many months and marathon recording sessions, the project’s all-star roster would grow to include: Roy Hargrove, Roy Ayers, Jay Dilla, Betty Wright, Zap Mama, Karen Wheeler, Tom Soares, Jack DeJohnette and many others. As executive producer, with musicians who understood her vision, Badu was in her element. She would write and arrange over a dozen songs while conducting her bandmates and artist friends. The masterpiece that resulted is both celebration and commemoration of that time and those moments. Even now, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Mama’s Gun remains a vital, genre-pushing, and arresting listen. An Essential release in a catalog that is itself Essential.
