Ataúlfo Argenta was born at Castro Urdiales (a province of Santander). A pianist by training, he studied at the Madrid Conservatoire and furthered his studies in Belgium and Germany. His conducting success began with the Madrid Chamber Orchestra and ultimately led him to lead the National Orchestra of Spain, performing with major European orchestras.
