Hey, people!
Up on the auction block today is a real gem: an immaculately preserved copy of Eugene Chadbourne's landmark 1980 LP There'll Be No Tears Tonight on the seminal downtown Parachute label. This is an original pressing, number P013, and not one of the later reissues on Fundamental. Not only is it original: it is in awesome shape. I don't like to use the term "NM," but it is really well-preserved, with no seam splits or blemishes. It is a nice old hard-card stock sleeve, too. LP is in great shape, with no flaws that I can see/hear, and with cool old cut-up artwork on the labels. Setting aside all of the above stuff about condition and whatnot, it should be said that this is a tremendous (and tremendously important) record, one which marks the intersection of any number of traditions -- all boldly fractured and reassembled in the moment. Featured players include Chadbourne (on guitar, dobro, and singin'), John Zorn (alto, soprano, and bari sax, and birdcalls and clarinet), David Licht (drums), Tom Cora (awesome cello), and more. They convene on a set of country standards chosen by Chadbourne, and interpret them as self-described "Free Improvised Country & Western Bebop"-- which is pretty accurate, really. Zorn especially, on the four cuts that feature him, sounds fired up and intrigued by the possibilities of this hybrid...it's also one of the few places I've heard him play bari and soprano sax, and clarinet.
