In September 1960, Leningrad Philharmonic, led by Yevgeny Mravinsky, visited the United Kingdom and gave sensational concerts in Edinburgh and London. This is a session recording made by Deutsche Grammophon on this occasion. The ferocious momentum of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 is a popular performance. Perfectionist Mravinsky was pleased with the recording, and two months later, at the Wiener Musikverein, he agreed to record Nos. 5 and 6 on the DG. Every work conveys a very tense raw energy. Especially the 5th finale is a masterpiece and breathtaking speed.
