This beautiful gatefold LP from Philips (L 00.381 L, French pressing, red/white label, mono) features the remarkable pianist Jacqueline Eymar in a classic account of César Franck’s Piano Quintet in F minor, made with the legendary Loewenguth Quartet. Filling out the disc is her no less mesmerising rendition of the composer’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue.
The former was recorded at the Bachzaal, Amsterdam, on 23 May 1955 while the latter was set down at the Salle Adyar, Paris, on 8 September 1953.
At this time, the Quatuor Loewenguth was comprised of Alfred Loewenguth (1st Violin), Maurice Fueri (2nd Violin), Roger Roche (Viola), and Pierre Basseux (Cello).
This is exalted playing by any measure – vibrant, warm, and lyrical – wonderful from first to last.
The left interior panel of the gatefold jacket contains insightful liner notes (uncredited), provided in French only, while the right interior panel carries color reproductions of other titles in the impressive “Trésors Classiques” series. The striking cover design is uncredited.
PLEASE NOTE:
With packaging, this particular issue will weigh over 500 g. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $22 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $25 USD.
Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.
Anyway, all this to say that those who feel the price is high need to take the cost of shipping into account. If you have any questions or doubts, feel free to write and I will be happy to help. Thank you.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear and shelfwear, but that is all. However, there are no seamsplits or owners' markings, and the whole remains extremely solid and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
