FABULOUS FUTURAS Ask About Love 1964 MADD INC. IKON 45 Shipping Info  |  TERMS AND CONDITIONS  |  SALES THEME   Description THE FABULOUS FUTURA'S "WHEN YOU ASK ABOUT LOVE/LA DO DA DA" IKON Records X-1520/1521. Vinyl: EXCELLENT PLUS, Label: NEAR MINT! ORIGINAL 1964 FIRST PRESSING 45 RPM 7-INCH SINGLE RECORD/THIS 45 was issued with NO CATALOG NUMBER, however, the X-1520/1 numbers are etched in the RUN-OFF GROOVE/ONLY 100 COPIES WERE EVER PRESSED!
"LOVE", originally recorded by BUDDY HOLLY And THE CRICKETS, appears on "THE IKON RECORDS STORY" 2-CD set on Frantic Records released in 2005! However, the flip side, a cover of DALE HAWKINS "LA DO DA DA", has never been issued on CD! Esteemed music writer ALEC PALAO wrote in the liner notes: "One of the earliest IKON rock records was by this Marysviile, CA combo, precursors to the mighty MADD, INC. Their September 1964 single,...was a reverberating arrangement of THE CRICKETS "WHEN YOU ASK ABOUT LOVE" with some hot guitar from JIMMY ANDERSON. Vocals on both sides were handled by bass player and group leader GARY BAERMAN [aka GARY DEE] a Wisconsin native who was 'checking around to see if anyone needed a bass player. That's how I met FERRELL DEATON and we formed the FUTURAS in the latter part of 1963.' After the group split in mid-1965, BAERMAN and DEATON formed the embryonic MADD INC.!" The unreleased side comes across as a Rockabilly/Surf Music vocal with some hot and exotic twangy guitar work!! This is a smokin' record, Jack!
At the time of this recording, I worked at IKON Records stocking shipments of 45's and setting up the studio for recording sessions. I worked there under the direction of my mentor [and older cousin] JIM BARKLEY. I worked there during 1964-65 off and on. In 1966, still a high school junior, I got my first radio gig as an all-night Jazz DJ and dropped my work at IKON. JIM used to allow me in the control booth during sessions and let me watch the recording process. I remember meeting ERIK WANGBERG but our time at IKON barely overlapped and I wasn't around for much of his work there. Needless to say, I have great memories of my time at IKON and profound thanks to JIM BARKLEY for his introduction into the world of music where I spent the next 30 years. R.I.P. JIM. This is 1 of 8 IKON RECORDS 45's in my current auctions!
