Label/Format: Neon, a progressive subsidiary of RCA (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only barely any spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This record looks barely played.

Cat Number: NE 1.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. Above average for its era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: few bands made albums on this short-lived label and all are sort-after and very collectable. This title probably being the least difficult to find. A beautifully designed label but pressing quality varied considerable. The very best quality vinyl was not always used for Neon Records and that often means surface sound and crackle. When viewed critically under light, it can be seen this is not a pure as the best pressings and even though this looks little played, slight surface sound is just evident on side two. I am talking minor here and this plays way better than some Neon albums I have heard, anything present here is light, faint and minor and this record will not be easy to find much better.

Brief Info: Formed by Fairweather Low after the split of Amen Corner and with a certain irony in the title, this was a one-off album on the new progressive off-shoot label Neon, part of RCA. This band were as short-lived as the label and Low then pursued a solo career and worked with several major acts later and successfully toured with Roger Waters.

Cover Grade and Format: Very Good. An unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: A somewhat wear-prone cover and with that in mind, this looks nice but does have some blemishes and light marks when viewed up real close. A small stain near the left edge towards the bottom has modest visibility. Some fine pressmarks under light and some edge rubs encroach into view but again only modestly small. Any general rubbing quite light and still clean and overall this delicate front still looks nice.

Cover Back: Similar again with light surface marks and light residue mark near the left edge again. A little light rubbing and rim arc traces but the lack of creasing each side is a bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is very attractive and has little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Moderate rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Light on front, moderate on back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Fairly sharp with a little mildish thickening but no feathering or trimming. Record enters on the back edge, the front being closed.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight with minimal compression, a mild tilt to left. Some light rubbing on the folds and ends, light staining near the bottom. Foldeded slightly off-square in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: All have moderate rubbing but retain reasonable shape.

Cover Summary: Actually looking far better than my description may suggest, the edge rubbing being the most significant factor with the other things being minimal and light. Still a more than respectable looking cover and it will please many collectors but clearly not the more discerning this time.

The Inner Sleeve: Neon records came with a high quality black polylined inner sleeve and this one is almost like new which emphasises the fact the record has not been removed or played very much.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Vinyl Condition/Visual & Play Grading: EX++, with few surface marks and looking little played. With scrutiny under bright light, side two has those slight impurity marks within the pressing. These fine blemishes are only seen with careful viewing and can easily be missed even within a normal daylit room. This has minimal effect on sound but very slight surface sound traces was just noticed between songs and odd quiet passage. This is not at all unusual on Neon Records and the fact this has barely any pops or clicks and tracks perfectly can be considered a bonus. I have heard some of the much rarer Neon albums like Indian Summer and Tonton Macoute that have sounded pretty terrible even though they looked clean and little played. Although the cover has taken some wear over the years, the record itself looks hardly exposed and has probably hardly left the protection of the cover. A fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again. This looks not too far off what it did back in the early 70s and sounds the same. I consider this record to be one of the better sounding ones I have heard on this rare label.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
