Label Conditions: Two truly beautiful pink labels that retain an incredibly deep rich colour. Almost an intense pink and showing only a tiny few, very faint spindle marks on side one and a mere hint of a couple on side two. A stunning pair that will be sure to please the Island connoisseur.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. My heaviest ever copy of this album and way over average.

Rarity: The first pink copies of this album are scarce and in fine, lightly played conditions quite rare. An album I have heard several times on the original pink format and so many crackle and often distort too. This album seems prone and intolerant of old needle abuse and often is ruined by their effects. This copy looks and plays beautifully with nothing unwanted and for a change too includes a really lovely cover. Equally as intolerant of heavy handling or poor storage this one is clean and fresh and shows little wear bar a very small and faint rub on the top back edge. This is a real strong copy for Fairport fans and Island collectors and the sound could hardly be beaten, this one pressed by EMI and way better than the Polydor matrix version.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The first post-Sandy Denny album was never going to be easy, but this album excels again with more pure quality folk-rock. With Dave Swarbrick now a full member this seven track album is another Fairport classic and includes the wonderful lengthy track ‘Sloth’. Unfortunately this was to be Richard Thompson’s final album with the band before persuing a solo career and his brilliant influence and songwriting skills were sorely missed after this album. This without doubt is one of the finest pink pressings I have seen or heard, devoid of the usual crackle and clipping so many portray these days. Even clean looking copies of this album can disappoint but few will be disappointed with this one – it’s a beauty.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): given the fact this delicate cover is so often seen in very poor conditions, this is a super example. An unlaminated gatefold format with a lovely textured finish on the front and back – sometimes referred to as the ‘Hessian’ cover. The inside is smooth. It was printed and made in England by the E. J. Group.

Cover Front: Fantastic looking and fresh with intense rich colour. Any grubbiness or ageing is miniscule and the lack or rubbing to the rough surface or creasing is a massive bonus for the cover connoisseur.

Cover Back: Very similar again and the lack of ringwear is a most welcome change. A light crease near the left edge showing little and a small rub on the top edge just about shows a fraction. Other than that, fantastic.

Cover Inner Gatefold: As near perfect as you will ever see and one of the most stunning band pictures ever put on an LP cover.

Top Edges: A fine small rub on the back centre, this a small pressure are from the record rim but fully intact. That apart, little else to fault, any other rub traces are tiny, few and faint.

Bottom Edges: Very light, few and faint patchy rub traces. These deep orange edges rarely escape some form of wear or rubbing but these are practically as good as they get.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light and mild. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A really strong spine too, again few of these escape rubbing or damage, often severe. This is very solid, straight and thick, mild traces of compression and folded square with barely any wear to the fragile surface. All text is present, solid and unworn which is great to see, but so often, not the case. Just a little mild rubbing to the top corner.

Corners: The spine top has rubbed but any elsewhere are very small and light and retain excellent or even better shape.

Cover Summary: A really attractive all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find significantly better. This impressive, fresh example will please the majority of collectors. The plain white unlined inner is included and aged little. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): hardly does this justice with just very light surface traces or hairlines as seen under bright angled light, they have NO effect on sound at all of course. Very clean, shiny, intense black and pressed on heavyweight vinyl. A really lovely looking (and sounding) record that has clearly been played little reitterated by outstanding clean, nigh-on perfect sound. For those wanting this classic to be heard at it’s very best, you need not look any further and this on one of the world’s most revealing turntables.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality: This record even exceeds it’s very conservative grading and plays with lovely clean sound. I have often found this album disappoint for clean sound, but not this one. Finding one so lightly played and well stored and looked after is always a huge bonus. This plays very quietly and has no pops or clicks. An impressive EMI pressing with no distortion or sound degrading at all. Thompson’s guitar chords are defined and sharp, even Swarbrick’s fiddle, always one of the most vulnerable to damage on vintage vinyl, is precise and distortion free. This without any doubt has never been subjected to piledriver vintage needles and this is immediately evident. A treat is in store for the winning bidder, cherish this wonderful recording at it’s very best. Early Fairports were very special and always nice to offer a very fine pink example. This is a delicate pink album that merits my highest recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
