Background -

Recorded, mixed and mastered in analog
Pressed on 180-gram vinyl double LP

"The trio of Tool drummer Danny Carey, guitarist John Ziegler and bassist Lance Morrison augmented by keyboardist Jeff Babko recorded this "high T" album at The Loft, Carey's home studio live to analog tape using a limited (to 95) edition Studer A827 Gold Edition 2 inch, 24-track analog tape recorder. ... The board was an API 2448 with Neve Flying Faders. While some analog enthusiasts wuss-out and mix to digital, not these guys! They mixed to a Studer A800 at Joe's House of Compression through an SSL 4000B board ("why"? "why"? "why"? say the SSL haters). Trust me: the board didn't harm the recording quality nor did Joe over compress it on the way to two tracks. ... I can't think of a better way to get one's adrenaline pumping then to put this 3 sided album on and rock out!" — Music = 9/11; Sound = 9/11 - Michael Fremer

From the very get-go Volto! was an oddity. Normally, when a few close friends get together to jam, they usually spend half the time in the garage talking about how they could make it big. When those friends happen to be members of Tool, Pigmy Love Circus and a mix of the most accomplished musicians around, you get a somewhat different conversation. Volto! delivers a hypnotic mix of experimental jazz, rock, fusion, prog and blues. Their self-produced album, Incitare features nine original instrumental pieces, recorded and mixed by Joe Barresi at Tool's Loft Studio. Volto!'s radical fusion is impossible to classify.
Guitarist John Ziegler cites influences such as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, but the band clearly draws heavily from the art rock, tribal, space jazz, metal genres. The music is rhythmic, driving and magnetic, thanks to the expert play of group members Danny Carey (drummer), Lance Morrison (bassist) and Jeff Babko (keyboardist). And while you shouldn't expect to hear a 20-minute rendition of "Whipping Post", and can't say with absolute certainty what keyboardist will be sitting in to augment the music, the sheer precision with which Volto! plays will leave you stunned.
Formed in the early 2000s around some of Los Angeles' most accomplished musicians, including Tool drummer Danny Carey, Pigmy Love Circus guitarist John Ziegler, Jimmy Kimmel Live! house band keyboard player Jeff Babko, and session player/Don Henley touring bassist Lance Morrison, Volto! specialize in heady, genre-spinning jazz-fusion rock that bridges the gap between King Crimson, Liquid Tension Experiment, and the Mars Volta. The band spent nearly a decade limiting their output to live performances before heading into the studio with veteran engineer Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Bad Religion), to lay down tracks for their 2013 debut, Incitare.  - James Christopher Monger

For fans of Tool and the late lamented Pygmy Love Circus, and followers of L.A.'s music scene, the release of Incitare, the debut album by instrumental power rock combo Volto!, is welcome news. The band is comprised of Tool (and former PLC) drummer Danny Carey, ace session bassist Lance Morrison, and guitarist John Ziegler (also PLC). They have been playing together informally in rehearsals and on their city's club scene since 2000 whenever their schedules would allow, at the beginning as a cover band. We're talking jazz fusion, jam band craziness here -- Weather Report, Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa, etc. A few years back, they began playing their own tunes, often improvising them on the stage. When they decided to record, they enlisted veteran session keyboardist Jeff Babko and recording engineer Joe Baressi, and cut Incitare live to 24-track analog tape in Carey's home studio. The live feel -- four of these nine cuts were first takes, the rest were second or third -- is immediately apparent. While there are massive metallic grooves on cuts such as opener "Grip It," "Gillz," "Drumbeaux," and "BHP," all wear the influences of Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer, Larry Coryell's Eleventh House, Bill Connors-era Return to Forever, the late Larry Young albums, etc., but are read through the knotty, mathy, prog metal heaviness of bands such as Meshuggah and Japan's Tipographica. Even on more straightforward tracks, such as "Whopner," where a slow monstrous Ziegler riff (answered with outstanding fills and extensions by Morrison) dominates the main body of the track, the shifts in tempo (courtesy of Carey's arch snare and bass drum work), architecture, and dynamics are pronounced. Babko's keyboards on this cut -- which alternate between organ, synth, and Rhodes -- offer not only textural variety, they provide key structural frames for the other instruments to key off of. While "Meltdown" is a completely improvised bit of keyboard and drum skronk, given how tight the rest of the set is, it's a welcome interlude rather than a distraction. Carey's drumming throughout relies on depth of field and precise syncopation, and is in general more interesting than it is with Tool (which is saying plenty); his rumbling quick snare breaks, fills, rolls, and rim shots on "Tocino" -- as they double- and even triple-time the rest of the band -- are astonishing. Closer "I'm Calm Now" may commence slowly, but its tempo offers an opportunity for some of the most melodic hard rock playing on the entire date; it's a killer showcase for the soulfulness in Ziegler's guitar playing and the band's ability to play loose and free as well as taut and complex. As a debut, Incitare's inspirations may be heavily steeped in the past, but Volto! is a band whose members write, arrange, and play with modern imagination, sophistication, and an infectious energy. - Thom Jurek

CONDITION Details:

The GATE-FOLD LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket has NO seam splits. The corners and seams are solid, with some very minor shelf wear along the seams and corners. The colors on the jacket are clean and sharp - like a new jacket virtually!

The 2-LPs are in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this 2-LP set. There are no significant marks and the LPs retain much of the original gloss and sheen - there may be some very light spider marks on the vinyl, caused by sliding the LP in and out of the inner sleeve. There may be some dust and the odd finger print on the vinyl. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels. A finer copy would be difficult to find!

A Short Note About LP GRADING -
  • Mint = Only used for sealed items.
  • Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
  • Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
  • Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
  • Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.

The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
