It's been listening to this on a modern turntable with good (great) headphones that has made me understand what Eno brought to their sound--not just more complexity but a real attention to recording interesting timbres and effects--it's an album that "scales," i.e. the better the sound of your stereo, the better and better the record sounds and feels.
Of course their first album was an agreeable shock and full of innovation--and of course they would later expand their possibilities almost immeasurably, and the sense of world music would start to appear as early as "Fear of Music"--and so this second record gets overlooked. But every song is brilliant, the ideas and production a leap ahead of "Talking Heads '77," and songs like "I'm Not in Love" (definitely not the 10cc symphony of the same name) really sound like they could fit in on, say, "Remain in Light."
It's a beautiful LP mastering, the first pressing, done at Masterdisk in LA, and includes the custom inner sleeve.
The vinyl is pristine, gorgeously quiet, but I'm only calling it NM- because there's a single quiet little scrape sound between tracks 3 and 4 on side 2 (in the silent grooves) and a tiny bit of surface sound during the side 2 runout grooves. I grade these by listening through Stax Lambda electrostatic "earspeakers," and they act as a kind of audio loupe that picks up any flaws very clearly. You likely will not hear any issue at all, but once I've heard it I have to grade it accordingly!
The sleeve I'll call VG+, it's still nice looking and no major issues at all. The custom inner sleeve is the same.
LOTS of great listening here--this band never stops amazing me.
