DETAILSQuite a rave up indeed. This is a remarkable document of the fervor and energy of early British R&B and Blues melding in London that started with Alexis Korner's gigs in Ealing and the Rolling Stones' thunderous melding of jazz drumming, Berry licks and Chicago blues back-beats at the Crawdaddy in upper-crust Richmond on the West End.
Once the Stones found a record deal, the Yardbirds succeeded them at the Crawdaddy and while this is a few months down the road from that transition and recorded in the heart of the city proper, it's a remarkable document of the power and energy of these 1963-1965 UK R&B gigs and how exceptional the Yardbirds were from the get-go at finding a balance between mainstream R&B numbers, a blues respectability and a remarkable post War energy.
They absolutely let loose with reckless abandon from the get-go and seems very much in step with the raucous stylings of Jerry Lee Lewis, but put to guitar instead of keyboards and piano. This is one of the truly great live albums of the all-time, easily on the top 20 of must-listens if you want to understand the history of rock music and its re-exporting to the United States from the UK.
Listen to the fire, the relentless energy of the rhythm section and the raveups on guitar in between some of the fretting, these are remarkable fills being played in subtle ways by Clapton and seasoned guitarists will pick up on the nuances quickly. While Relf isn't a remarkable front-man in the vein of Van Morrison and Them or as rootsy and earthy as Graham Bond back by Baker and Bruce, the rhythm section here simply won't be denied on this recording and propels the music beyond the vocals into an incredibly gripping listen that once you've heard it, you'll never forget it.
This is full on nasty R&B played at a pace and energy no one in Liverpool or Manchester could duplicate this kind of ferocity was seen only in London and Birmingham at the time.
A historic occasion and recording meant to be played loud.
