Label Conditions/Rarity & Overview: Both look brand and practically are, any spindle traces are few and very faint, seen under light. This may sound a little far-fetched, but this is actually the honest truth. This was owned by a very good friend who bought this from new, played it once and told me ‘I don’t like it’. And there it was stored within a rack and not touched since, yes true. This cover and record has not seen light-of-day since the day it was bought. Well for the vast majority of the many buyers of this famed album, most played it many times, sometimes almost into the ground. This album sold in huge numbers and is pretty easy to find in all formats. The reason I offer this is not just for the wonderful music, production and sound, it’s the condition. The cover is immensely difficult to find looking as good as when first issued. Most being scuffy, grubby, creased and tired looking. The records with more ‘miles on the clock’ than a 1970s Ford. Finding early copies that could almost pass for new is hard, and for the most discerning collector wanting either to upgrade or just needing a copy, well this beauty will take a massive amount of beating. Such examples that are made available, are much, much harder to find.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. About average for its era.

Rarity: A common album, anyone who states otherwise is taking you for a fool. With massive sales on all formats, this is one of the world’s most popular albums. Conditions however are paramount as stated above and genuine near mint, early-pressed copies put on the open market are much more elusive. Few would want to part with a copy in this condition and I would think many actually seek one that could pretty much pass for new.

Brief Info: No Music lover of a certain age will not know that album well and I don’t intend to waste my or your time in any real details about this album. Suffice to say, it’s remains one of the most popular and loved albums ever issued. It won a host of awards and achieved multi-platinum sale awards. Since issued, used by many audiophile hi-fi buffs as a test record for serious audio systems. The production quality is rated by many is near perfection, it sounds simply stunning on worthy equipment with flawless sonic quality, dynamics and realism. The vocals are gorgeous as are all the songs. As stated, conditions for me are main factor for offering this record. Most seen at fairs any other venue for records, are in pretty shabby conditions. If the record itself has not been over-played, the cover usually lets it down by being grubby, creased or torn – we have probably all seen countless copies like that. This bucks the trend and will prove immensely difficult to find better. A good friend was not as impressed by this as the majority of the record-buying public and it has not been touched for many years. Almost perfectly preserved within a protective sleeve, this copy is close to immaculate and sounds the same. One great to hold and view, and even more importantly, pristine perfect sound for the discerning listener. Enough said I think.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: Almost one I can contemplate grading full Mint, but with a tiny, (TINY), burr trace on the opening edge and odd mega-fine surface crease (see with scrutiny), I will play safe and grade Mint(-) which is no men grading for this highly intolerant cover. A single format with matt finish and beautifully textured on both sides. Printed and made in England by Gothic Print and includes the gatefold insert and original inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Absolutely gorgeous and as clean and fresh as when issued. The ultra tiny burr trace on the right edge being the only minuscule (near microscopic) blemish. This has to be seen for real to be fully appreciated.

Cover Back: The back is of equal beauty and finding both sides devoid of rubbing and grubbiness is little short of remarkable.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Practically unworn, any traces of friction marks on this resting edge being almost beyond faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. The one tiny burr trace is so tiny few would even bother to mention it. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn and any traces of discolour barely even register.

Corners: All as crisp and pointed as when made.

Cover Summary: An unusually fine all round example of this very unforgiving 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The original plain white unlined inner is Mint, totally unaged or worn at all with all edges including the recessed shaped top opening like new.

The Lyric Insert: Mint. This is double size with one manufactured fold. One side has the song lyrics the other with lovely black and white band pictures. It is made with good weight card too.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), with scrutiny under light, a tiny few ultra fine surface traces can be just seen, even finer than hairlines. Unlined inners are never a record’s best friend and remember, records were handled in manufacture prior to packing and as this album was mass-produced, few are going to be devoid of the faintest possible surface blemishes. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy now played just twice after many mandatory sound-check. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is of audiophile standard with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Possibly the perfect production and one of the landmark recordings ever issued. A long favourite of hi-fi enthusiasts and often used by audio shops for demonstrating high fidelity systems. Indeed I ‘used’ a copy of this record on many occasions when purchasing my next upgrade (and still do). Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. With vast sales and supply and demand under strain even from day one on this album, with huge pre-orders, it would not have been unusual for pressing quality to suffer (like some of the Floyd titles for example), but this Warner record was in most cases fine. Anyway, this is a beauty and delivers all the songs supremely well. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, the record and cover hardly even handled and carefully stored within a non-smoking environment (another good reason the cover is so clean). Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
