All five members were going through breakups—John and Christine McVie were divorcing, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had split, and Mick Fleetwood was facing domestic issues. The band channeled their resentment directly into the lyrics, essentially writing "musical diaries" about each other. Sessions were marked by extreme substance use and late-night "party" atmospheres. Owners of the Record Plant noted the band would often party until 1 AM before starting to record while "whacked-out”.
Notable for high-quality audio, early pressings feature "Mastered by Capitol" and "KP" (Ken Perry) in the runout grooves. These original copies often include a textured cover and a folded lyric insert.
