Label/Format: Reprise – Dark Tan original with matt finish and NO Warner label at the 3 o'clock position. Any copy of this album, regardless of matrix numbers with the small Warner logo is NOT a first pressing (please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both immaculate: incredibly fresh, clean and super-attractive with that deeper tan finish that only the first-made examples had. This is a truly STUNNING first pressed record with just a couple of ultra faint spindle traces on side one (but look incredibly hard to see them) and none at all on side two. An immaculate all-round copy, probably played once prior to my mandatory sound-check and offering pristine audiophile sound – one for the Zappa connoisseur.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good weight for this, later ones made much thinner.

Rarity: Moderately scarce – harder as a first issue with the heavier vinyl and darker labels. Finding near mint examples – that is cover, record and sound – is difficult. I was truly in two minds whether to even offer this one being a self-confessed Zappaphile. As I own a pristine Mint example myself with the front sticker I can let this go (somewhat reluctantly), as this indeed could be even better than my own, the only difference is the position of the front cover sticker. I can hardly imagine finding this classic Mothers album better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This is one of the most jaw-drop gorgeous Zappa albums I have yet offered on Ebay, and this is one of his very best and in the type of condition his fans demand. Certainly one of the most inspired albums he produced in the early 70s. This carries on the ideas on Waka/Jawaka and extends them much further with a big band of session musicians and a few of the remaining Mothers of Invention. This is a predominately an instrumental set and includes some stunning solos and virtuosity. The Grand Wazoo must have surprised those who thought Zappa had gone down the road of bawdiness and wanted more of the same – this proved yet again the unpredictable nature of his albums and that was just one reason why his music and career was so fascinating. It was recorded when he was recovering from the horrendous fall from the stage at the London’s Rainbow Theatre after being pushed into the orchestral pit by a disgruntled fan. This is a superb set, one of my personal favourites from his amazing catalogue. This is big band jazz-rock, often dubbed as ‘Art Rock’, few albums I have heard sound quite like it. Highly rhythmical, with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, George Duke on keyboards and featuring a great Moog solo by Don Preston. An album including 22 musicians including Frank, this is brilliantly produced by the man himself and this copy plays with all the audio quality of the master tape. I doubt if it had been played any more than once or twice. Something of a landmark album that provides a stepping-stone to his later complex instrumental works. For those who found the more vocal Zappa albums a little hard to handle, these extended high quality instrumental albums were to more serious rock lovers taste. The cover is astonishing, featuring stunning artwork from Cal Schenkel, this would have helped sell a few albums for those curious buyers at the time – but like most – it again failed to chart. One all collectors will want near perfect and this will not disappoint, never easy being somewhat prone to all forms of wear if not treated and protected carefully. The record is simply supreme and offers the ultimate in detail with an immaculately pressed record that offers NO unwanted sounds at all. The cover looks practically new and few ever will even get close. This is kind’a like jazz, but not as we know it – Parompa pom pom.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): and as close to a full Mint grading as I could almost ever imagine. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed in England by Howards. Later ones had a semi-glossy sheen, the first issues were always very matt. A small number of the first-made had identification stickers on the front, and this one has it as seen in close-up, these are considerably rarer, especially when seen in this truly breathtaking condition.

Cover Front: WOWIE ZOWIE!! – I have always loved the cover of this album, so much detail and work went into it and this example does it 100 per cent maximum justice. This front is one mega-faint edge hairline of full Mint, yes true, nigh-on pristine perfect, I can find no other ‘faults’ at all. The rare sticker is equally immaculate, clean and totally unpicked and never removed. A work-of-art that will never be beaten.

Cover Back: Practically the same again, any blemishes go even beyond minuscule.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Few colours are more revealing of grubbiness than yellow – this again has practically nothing to fault at all. Like all of the other major faces on this cover, ultra clean and fresh. All the musicians are pictured with instrument details and the text describes the ‘Legend of Cleetus Awreetus’.

Top Edges: Both dead straight with no wear whatsoever.

Bottom Edges: Again both very straight and lay dead flat when closed. A very small rub on the back near the right corner – this the only reason I decided against a full Mint grading. That apart, as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both immaculate: the front is tucked and folded with a real edge, not cut, this is little short of pristine. The back entrance is practically the same: very sharp, clean and crisp with no burring or thickening, it is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Wowie Zowie again: this spine is Mint. A complex graphic spine that is totally pristine. Very solid and straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel – this makes the difference between average and exceptional – this beauty IS exceptional. All text and artwork perfect and unworn, totally unaged, faded or grubby. Even the ends are neat and crisp – all details seen on my close-up pictures. Seeing is believing, few will even get close to this.

Corners: Can any wear-prone cover like this ever have near mint corners? Well yes, just a tiny rub trace on the back bottom right, and I am taking a couple of microns. These retain pristine 90 degree shape with NO dinks, tip-ins or wear worthy of real mention. Simply outstanding.

Cover Summary: A reference-quality Grand Wazoo cover – and one of Zappa’s most spectacular and colourful, and it has that first-made manufacturer’s sticker too in perfect condition. The amazing artwork is as complex as the music enclosed. This one-in-many-thousand example should please every collector needing it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and this being very critical. A plain white, unlined inner so typical of Reprise for this period. Barely aged at all with any hint of creasing tiny and faint, clean with no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: PRACTICALLY MINT: a word I will not use even if I can see the faintest trace of a hairline or microscopic blemish – and here I really cannot. The only reason ‘Practically’ Mint is because of the ultra faint spindle trace on one label, which tells me it had received at least one play. This ultimate first issue record is simply immaculate and gleams. Ulra clean with fantastic shine and freshness, intense black and solidly pressed. Finding a first issue copy of better will prove nigh-on impossible.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: WOWIE ZOWIE!! – this Zappa big band classic plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full and wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds, no pops, no clicks were noted and few copies will match, let alone better this for quality sound. Detail from the large band and the sheer power and realism on any quality system will impress even the most demanding listener and this record gives a commanding performance. This is analogue and vinyl near it’s ultimate best. Zappa proves again he is the master musician, a man capable of producing such varied and wide ranging styles of music. Who wants predictable formulated music? – every album this man made was different and unpredictable – that is why is was impossible to get bored with him. This record without any doubt, has barely been played and offers audiophile audio quality. Stored to the highest possible standard and barely even handled, I would wager this record or cover had seen light-of-day for decades, and stored within a smoke-free environment. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Zappa classic. I strongly recommend to any discerning music listener – fan or not – any real music lover can hardly fail to like it. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation. For those yet to discover the wonderful world of Frank Zappa – give this one a go – but be warned – his music is highly addictive and his catalogue is vast – an album to give your system and mind a good workout – Parompa pom pom (again).

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
