How Zappa's third - and greatest - album came to be censored during the mixing/mastering of the original session tapes is anyone's guess. Legend has it that Verve records - under new (MGM) management and intense pressure from new musical director (Mike Curb) to produce more "family -oriented", i.e. bland, non-controversial "rock" such as Cowsills, caved in and DELETED a few (for that day and age)  particularly brazen and bold Zappa's lines and rhymes without his knowledge or permission (one in the song "Who needs the Peace Corps", and another in the song "Let's make the water turn black"). However, we don't think that this explanation holds water. Namely, if Verve really wanted to have this new "neutered" version of the album replace the "uncensored" version, than the "censored" version would have been much, much,much easier to find - WHICH IS NOT THE CASE: These "edited" versions are much harder to find, particularly in good shape. Then, there is an old rock lore tale according to which Zappa himself pressed a few hundreds of these "censored" copies and distributed them among friends to portrait himself as a tortured-and-persecuted artiste. However, this story is totally out of character and does not sound like something Zappa would do - not even as a prank. We strongly suspect that some IQ-challenged mid-level Verve manager (or maybe even Mike Curb himself) came to the stupid idea, and was then quickly overruled - either by Zappa or the rest of the label - but not before a few hundreds of of these alternate versions of the album were pressed and released into circulation. Whatever the case, you have one of the legendary, fairy -tale pieces of Rock'n'Roll History. Miss it now and Freak Out later!!!

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its original Sgt. Pepper parody cutout insert INCLUDED.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Stock (commercially released) mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Back cover has a small razor-like line (cut) on the cover, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intact and no part is missing, but the razor line is visible.

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn  (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has some writing on its front side (initials of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1/4  x 1/4 inches in size)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams (yet_

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
