Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label Conditions: Both labels are in superb condition. Incredibly fresh, clean and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. A challenging complex album with impressive clean sound throughout. A quality clean pressing manufactured by CBS.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: The original first pressing on the tri-coloured Reprise label is moderately scarce. It proved to be the final Zappa album issued on this label and was quite a late one on this format. Both ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ and ‘Weasel’s Ripped My Flesh’ albums both appeared in 1970 with RSLP prefixes, but they went immediately to the new tan format design. Better pressed examples are hard to find and also this album is very intolerant of heavy-tracking on basic record players from the past. With electric violin, some quite passages and complex instrumentals mean more difficult tracking and so many are seen scratched and the sound ruined with groove wear and damage causing clipping and distortion. This record appears hardly played and plays superbly with very little unwanted. Lastly, the cover: this almost always wears badly, especially the back that is often rife with deep penetrating ring wear and rarely seen with little. Well this virtually avoided it altogether and is one of the finest I have ever had to offer.

These are all uncredited on the UK cover that never included the insert sheet the American copies initially had.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Some of Zappa’s finest instrumentals are ‘Sandwiched’ inbetween two slices of doo-wop trivia – a 'weeny' is an American term for a hotdog. ‘Igor’s Boogie’ was written for Stravinsky, while ‘Holiday in Berlin’ was for the militant German students who had invaded the stage in October 1968, demanding that Zappa make an anti-capitalist statement (Zappa later said their leaders wanted him to tell the audience to burn down a nearby American forces base). ‘Aybe Sea’ was a tinkling piano piece that again relied on Ian Underwood’s sensitive touch. The centre-piece of this superb album is ‘The Little House I Used to Live In’, which occupies most of side two. It’s similar in structure to the Hot Rats album, with blistering solos from Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin – an awesome electric storm – and the finale is an organ solo frenzy by Frank himself. After ‘Little House’ there is a short dialogue between Zappa and a member of the audience, this always intrigues me as you cannot really here clearly what the heckler is saying, but Frank’s lines are: “Everyone here is wearing a uniform, don’t kid yourself’’ and “You will hurt your throat, stop it’’ – the heckler shuts up. This copy includes a first issue record that appears hardly played and offers superb sound with probably the least unwanted I have heard since I played my own copy. The cover is fantastic and again hardly worn, and that is a very unusual sight these days – the lack of ring wear is a major rarity for this one. A copy most Zappa and Mothers fans will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated, gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the original ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes the polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very colourful and bizarrely strange, this retains rich colour with no fading with barely any creasing or rubbing. Really impressive and seldom seen better.

Cover Back: Impossibly difficult, most often seen with deep cutting ring wear and heavy rubbing. A small press mark near the top that hardly registers apart, this one of the finest, least-worn you will find. I will let my pictures do the talking.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as-made.

Top Edges: Straight, flush and unworn.

Bottom Edges: Very similar, any rubbing to these storage edges being very little, patchy and very light indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening tiny and light. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A robust quite thick barely worn spine. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The numerous text unworn as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very intolerant and difficult early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): A fine crease on the back stops a higher grading. A plain white polylined inner with two pristine window circles and clear lining, any other creasing minimal and light. All edges naturally intact. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+)/(++): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed on quality vinyl pressed by CBS. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Side one has a very fine line surface mark that does nothing whatsoever. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers apart. Visually a super, hardly played record that should please many, and unless visual ‘perfection’ is mandatory, most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, even that impossibly difficult quiet piano introduction that opens side that is rarely devoid of loud crackle and noise, any traces here minimal and faint. A very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing faults. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. A copy matching my own and it will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new Nessie Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
