Description
This is the rare 10 record set that comprises the musical history (from 1963 to 1985) of Frank Zappa from a 1963 concert of avant-garde orchestral music to the early Mothers of Invention to performances with the Saturday Night Live band (with guest artist John Belushi) and the Mike Douglas house band to unreleased Flo & Eddie live performances and much, much more. I feel that this box is superior to both sets of "Beat the Boots" because a) the music is of a generally higher quality with a bare minimum of edits and b) the music is in chronological order (well, the first eight albums are, anyway) so you can easily trace Zappa's development as a musician and performer. Much (although not all) of this music is astonishing and I'm only selling this because I fortunately have another copy.
CONDITION: The records are MINT unplayed. The box is MINT MINUS with a very minimal crush indent (barely noticable) in the upper right corner. I bought this new and have never played it. The box was 90% sealed in a loose baggy, which I took off in order to take the photo below. Each album has a different colored label (orange, magenta, green, powder blue, light teal, red, silver, tan, pink, and white) and is pressed on excellent quality, medium-thick vinyl. The albums are individually titled as follows:
- PIGS 'N' REPUGNANT
- SON OF PIGS 'N' REPUGNANT--The 1968-69 Mothers live in the US and Europe (with Wild Man Ficher and trumpeter Don Cherry). Contains a version of "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque" that is much more intense than the version on "Weasels Ripped My Flesh."
- BEYOND THE FRINGE OF AUDIENCE COMPREHENSION--Live Flo & Eddie tracks, 200 Motels outtakes, Hutchentoon tracks, one track from the "Queen of Blood" soundtrack.
- ZUT ALORS--The Petite Wazoo (1973), previously unreleased "Zoot Allures" tracks, and a version of "Black Napkins" with the Mike Douglas house band.
- THE RONDO HATTON BAND--live in Passaic, NJ and Sydney (1973).
- A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME--TV special recorded at KCET, 1974. Phenomenal stereo sound.
- CHALK PIE--Saturday Night Live with John Belushi and 4 Ike Willis-era outtakes.
- CRUSH ALL BOXES--Side one of the unreleased "Crush All Boxes" LP, plus various studio rehearsals and outtakes.
- RETURN OF THE SON OF SERIOUS MUSIC--Avant-garde orchestral performance at St. Mary's College (1963). Makes Ornette Coleman sound like Percy Faith. Also Francesco Zappa outtakes recorded on the Synclavier and a version of "Pedro's Diary" with the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra.
- RANDOMONIUM--Early Mothers live tracks from 1967 (hysterical!), Flo & Eddie unreleased live, Kronos Quartet, "Baby Please Don't Go" live at the Fillmore with John Lennon, and more!
