Frank Zappa loved '50s doo-wop music. He grew up with it, collected it, and it was the first kind of pop music he wrote (like "Memories of El Monte," recorded by the Penguins in 1962).
Cruising With Ruben & the Jets, the Mothers of Invention's fourth LP, is a collection of such music, all Zappa originals (some co-written with MOI singer Ray Collins).
To the unexperienced, songs like "Cheap Thrills," "Deseri," and "Jelly Roll Gum Drop" can sound like an average doo-wop song but closer inspection reveals unusual chord sequences, Stravinsky quotes, and hilariously moronic lyrics — all that wrapped in four-way harmony vocals and linear piano triplets.
A handful of songs from the group's 1966 debut, Freak Out, were rearranged ("How Could I Be Such a Fool" and "Anyway the Wind Blows" give the weirdest results), old material predating the Mothers was recycled ("Fountain of Love"), "Love of My Life," and "You Didn't Try to Call Me" became live staples.

Track Listing:
Side 1: Cheap Thrills / Love Of My Life / How Could I Be Such A Fool / Deseri / I'm Not Satisfied / Jelly Roll Gum Drop / Anything
Side 2: Later That Night / You Didn't Try To Call Me / Fountain Of Love / "No. No. No." / Anyway The Wind Blows / Stuff Up The Cracks

LABELS: EXCELLENT - clean, bright and unmarked with moderate spindle markings. This copy has been well played but also extremely well cared for as is evident from the clean, practically unmarked surfaces and the sensational playback it delivers (please see detailed audio assessment below)
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+ The vinyl surfaces still retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked (there are some (very) light hairlines but these have no audio consequence)
VINYL Audio: Sounds sensational and plays beautifully with warm and vibrant audio reproduction and an impressive crystal clear and loud MONO cut. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks/pops and only the lightest touch of surface noise between some (not all) of the tracks - not during the music itself. The sound quality is exceptional throughout and the whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion. Critically graded a very strong EXCELLENT+ for audio this is a fantastic copy of this wonderful album - affectionate, warm, often hilarious and always quite, quite splendid
SLEEVE: The G&L front laminated flipback cover is critically graded a VERY GOOD++ The edges are crisp and square with very little storage wear and the spine displays all text clear and bold but the front does have a few light creases and the unlaminated back has a few spots. Having said that it is still one of the finest first issue sleeves I have seen and there is no structural damage to the sleeve (the flipback sections are all intact) - very fine example
