Aretha Franklin's Aretha Now is a masterclass in conviction, control, and interpretive genius. Across ten tight cuts, she doesn't just perform songs-she possesses them. 'Think' opens with defiant urgency, laying down the feminist fire that would come to define her political potency. Her version of 'I Say a Little Prayer' transforms Bacharach's elegance into something deeply devotional, while 'See Saw' and 'You're a Sweet Sweet Man' swing with punchy, Southern heat. But she's just as potent on ballads: her slow-burning 'Night Time Is the Right Time' and aching take on 'You Send Me' make it clear-Aretha can turn torch songs into personal reckonings. The lesser-known tracks, like the swooning 'Hello Sunshine' or the pleading 'I Can't See Myself Leaving You', only deepen the album's cohesion. She moves between gospel power, blues grit, and soulful polish with such ease it's disarming. This isn't genre-hopping-it's total command.
