- Text : Cover Rückseite über " Eddie Cochran " und seine Musik !
- To the casual observer of the Singles Charts, the appearance of Eddie Cochran's " C' mon Everybody " in the UK Top 20 during the early Months of 1988
- may have come as something of a surprise. However, to those who had considered the Single's re - release, Chart Status had been confidently predicted.
- " C' mon Everybody " had been carefully selected to form the backine Music to a certain blue denim Jeans IV. commercial which, more or less, guaranteed
- it chart success. Following this lavish media exposure one might have expected that this 1980's Eddie Cochran revival would soon fade once the Single
- had dropped out of the limelight Demand, however, for more Cochran re - releases resulted in the promotion of a successful " Singles " Album to be later
- followed by a handsome Box - Set. Clearly this Eddie Cochran revival was much more than a Single injection of Rock 'n' Roll Nostalgia. Quite obviously a
- whole new Generation had latched on in the Cochran Image of the '50s, identifying with his timeless Lyrics and infectious Vocal Style some thirty Years
- after Rock 'n' Roll's first wave had swept the Western Hemisphere.
- The Eddie Cochran Story began in the small Minnesota Town of Albert Lea on October 3rd 1938. Although the Cochran Family hailed originally from Okla -
- homa City, the Great Depression had forced the Family north where they were to remain until the early 1950s. Lured by the prospect of another fresh be -
- ginning the Cochran's moved again - this Time to the West Coast where they settled in the rapidly expanding suburbs of Los Angeles. As a young Teenager
- Eddie had already become quite an accomplished Guitarist and would rarely be seen without his most prized possession, practising the licks and Styles of
- Country Pickers like Chet Atkins.
- In late 1954, when still only 16, Eddie teamed up with his namesake Hank Cochran to form a Duo known as The Cochran Brothers ( though Hank was no
- relation ). Their Style was unashamedly Country and Hillbilly, firmly in the Hank Williams mould. The Duo gained considerable recognition in the California
- Area and were signed up for a recording Deal with the West Coast Label Ekko, Though none of their three releases on the Label made any great Impres -
- sion on the Record - buying Public of California, it's interesting to note how the Cochran Brothers Style changed significantly in the Year or so between the
- first and the last of their Recordings on Ekko. In the intervening Period, a certain Elvis Presley had been creating quite a stir in the South with his famed and
- controversial Performances on Shows like the Louisiana Hayride. Though The Cochrans were primarily a Country Duo, ihe young Eddie Cochran was astute
- enough to recognise that Presley's new Form of Country / Rockabilly was a force to be reckoned with. So on that last Ekko release Eddie had clearly begun
- to absorb the Presley influence into his own Songs and Recordings.
- In late 1955, at about the same Time as " Elvis " had been snapped up by RCA, Eddie had already met the next main influence of his Career - Jerry Capehart.
- Capehart, who would later became Eddie's Manager and Co - writer, was an aspiring young Song - Writer on the look -out for someone to make Demos of
- his Songs. In Eddie it seemed that he had indeed found his Man. Capehart was able to fix a Deal with a Publishing Company part of which allowed Eddie more
- or less unlimited access to the Recording Studio - Dream opporturaty for a young Guitarist eager to Master his trade and pick up any Session work that would
- come his Way. Hank Cochran didn't fully share Eddie's enthusiasm for Rockabilly - Music and consequentiy was not entirely happy with the Final Recordings
- that Duo had cut for Ekko. The inevitable split came in the Summer of 1956 when Hank parted Company with his " Brother " and took off to seek fame as Country
- Song - Writer in Nashville. By the middle of 1956 Eddie had clocked up a considerable Number of Studio hours in various L. A. Locations, primarily utilising his skills
- as a backing Session Guitarist rather than as a Vocalist. Jerry Capehart, however, clearly saw potential in Eddie as a Solo Artist and with this in mind set up his
- first " Solo " Session for Crest Records. Side 1 of this Album opens with the frantic " Skinny Jim " - Eddie's first attempt at a Solo Recording. This Liberty Version
- has extra Piano and Percussion overdubbed in the early sixties by A & R Man Snuff Garrett. Although " Skinny Jim " ( Eddie's Answer to Little Richard's " Long
- Tall Sally " ) failed to sell in any great Numbers, the Record did help to demonstrate Eddie's Vocal and Guitar Talents and was, at the very least, a Piece of wax
- that Jerry Capehart could harte around L.A. in the hope of securing a Deal from a bigger Label than Crest.
- It was, in Fact, a Mixture of Jerry's hard Work and good fortune which eventually resuted in a Deal with Liberty Records. Although founded only in the previous
- Year, Liberty had alreadv Hit big with Julie London's stylish " Cry Me A River " but, like most Labels, were keenly on the look - out for another " Elvis Presley ".
- Eddie's obvious Talent as a Musician and Vocalist as well as his good looks not only landed him the Liberty Deal but also a Part in the Classic Rock 'n' Roll Movie
- " The Girl Can't Help It ". Eddie's Sequence, though frustratingly short and frequently intertupted, is a masterly Performance of the superb " Twenty Flight Rock ".
- Eddie, knees bent, breathless and shuffling with those famous Head and Shoulder movements, cut an Image that was hard to forget. It seemed obvious that on
- he strength of national exposure via " The Girl Can't Help It ". Liberty would simultaneously release " Twenty Flight Rock " as their first Cochran Single but the
- Liberty Chiefs decided otherwise ! Eddie was rushed into the Studio in early 1957 to cut a Cover Version of a classy Teen Ballad " Sittin' In The Balcony " ( to
- Contest the original on Colonial by Johnny Dee ). Aimed directly at the Teen market, " Sittin' In The Balcony " rose quickly to the No. 18 spot in the Billboard Hot
- 100, staying in the Charts for some three Months - duly earning Eddie his first Gold Record. Regrettably the shelved " Twenty Flight Rock " missed the boat and
- was never to be a Hit - though in the course of Time it has quite justifiably become regarded as at me Rock'n' Roll Classic.
- Both " Blue Suede Shoes " and " Pink - Peg Slacks " Date back to Eddie's pre - Liberty experimentations with Rock 'n' Roll. At the Time, " Blue Suede Shoes " was
- a current smash by Carl Perkins whilst " Pink - Peg Slacks " was a Cochran / Capehart Composition. The latter had been attempted before in the Studio along with
- Hank Cochran but Eddie had obviously not been satisfied with the result, returning later in the year to polish off it's rqugh edges. This Liberty Version once again
- has the overdubbed Guitar and Drums which Snuff Garrett saw fit to add in the early sixties after Eddie's Death. With " Sittin' In the Balcony " firmly establishing
- Eddie Cochran as a Major force on the still new and developing Rock 'n' Roll Scene, Liberty pursued the usual path of following a Major Hit Single with an Album.
- In the Summer of 1957 Eddie cut some fourteen Numbers most of which ended up on the only Eddie Cochran L.P. issued during the Singer's Lifetime. " Singin' To
- My Baby " ( issued in the autumn of that Year ) was, no doubt, Liberty's attempt to broaden Eddie's Appeal beyond the teen market. Featuring an Orchestra and
- Chorus, the majority of the Songs ( as the Title suggests ) were either gentle Ballads or midly up - Tempo Rockers which even your Girl - Friend's Mother might
- not find offensive ! The UK. issue did include a re-worked " Twenty - Flight Rock " to hot things up a bit but in the States Liberty chose not to include it ! " Mean
- When l'm Mad " and " Stockin's And Shoes' " are both taken from the a Abum and constitute two of the more up - Tempo Numbers, though on both the Chorus is
- more evident than Eddie's Guitar Work. " Mean When l'm Mad " was one of the stranger Numbers on the Album with Eddie just about cutting loose with a Guitar
- Solo and it's nice to hear Connie " Guybo " Smith's slap - Bass coming through strongly. On " Stockin's 'n' Shoes " ( subtitled " Barefoot Rock " ) Eddie wasn't
- even permitted the luxury on a Guitar break !.
- During the latter Part of 1957 Eddie was busy consolidating successful Record Sales with Package shows across America and abroad. Of particular note was
- an incredible headline grabbing Tour of Australia with Little Richard and Gene Vincent.
- In Contrast to the somewhat bland Material chosen for the " Singin' To My Baby " Album, Eddie kicked off 1958 in fine Style with two belting Rockers that ought to
- have given him further Chart successes. " Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie " and " Pretty Girl " are both storming examples of Eddie at his rocking best but despite Lyrics
- brimful of Rock 'n Roll Cliches and some excellent Guitar Work both failed to seil in any great quantities. In Contrast to these two " Teresa " slows down the pace
- and brings Side 1 of this Album to a close. The Number was, in Fact, promoted as the A - Side to " Pretty Girl " but, despite being a pleasant enough ( if slightly
- sugary ) Teen Ballad, clearly wasn't Strang enough Material to give Eddie his first Hit of 1958. In Fact, by the middle of the Year the Liberty Chiefs must have been
- more than a shade concerned that their prime Rock 'n' Roller, now with six Liberty Singles behind him, had only struck Gold with " Sittin' In The Balcony " - his very
- first release on the Label. " Summertime Blues " couldn't have come at a more opportune Time. Promoted initially as the B - Side to love Again' it didn't take the DJ's
- long to flip the Record and fill the airwaves with that familiar semi - acoustic Riff that kicks oft this Rock 'n' Roll Masterpiece. The Classic " Summertime Blues " gave
- Eddie his first, and only, Top 10 Hit in the States. With its clever " harassed - youth " Lyric, its Message is as clear and relevant today as it was thirty Years ago in
- the late Summer of 1958. Little wonder that the Number has been copied ( but never bettered ) by just about every Rock 'n' Roll - Band that ever took to a Stage !.
- " Summertime Blues " was followed into the Charts by the equally impressive " C'mon Everybody " - again a Hit on both Sides of the Atlantic. With these two
- Major Hits behind him Eddie's Name was back in the forefront of the Rock 'n' Roll Scene. No doubt he could have rested on his laures and watched the rayalties
- pour in but, being something of a Workaholic, Eddie continued to be heavily involved in Session Work for the remainder of 1958 and beyond. Cochran was now a
- rnature and confident 20 Year old with enough experience and expertise to conduct his own Sessions as well as producing other Artists too. The catchy " Sweetie
- Pie ", " Rock 'n' Roll Blues " and the underrated " Nervous Breakdown " ate typical of Eddie's Work at the Time - good solid Material worthy of release but never seeing
- the Light of Day until after Eddie's Death.
- Selected as the follow - up to " C'mon Everybody " was " Teenage Heaven " backed with " I Remember " a beautiful Ballad which has come tu be regarded as Eddie's
- finest Work on a slow Number, Both Songs were performed by Eddie for the Movie " Go Johnny Go " but for some inexplicable reason " I Remember " was cut from the
- Final Soundtrack. " Little Angel " and John Estes' " Milk Cow Blues " stem from further Hollywood Sessions in mid - 1959 by which Time Eddie was frequently using The
- Kelly Four as a backing Group whose Members induded Gene Ridgio on Drums, Jim Stivers on Piano, Mike Henderson on Sax and Dave Schreiber on Bass. " Milk Cow
- Blues " is a superbly laid - back Version of the old Blues Classic exhibiting some fine Guitar Work from Eddie behind a increasingly confident Vocal Performance. The
- Final two Tracks on this Album stem from Eddie's very last Studio Session in the States recorded on the eve of his departure for a Tour of the U.K. linking up with his
- long - Time friend Gene Vincent. " Cherished Memories " was written for Eddie by his Girl - Friend Sharon Sheeley whilst eider Brother Bob Cochran had helped in the
- writing of " Three Steps To Heaven ". Eddie was greeted in Britain on January 10th 1960 as something of a Hero. Despite the Fact that hard Rock 'n' roll was largely on
- the Way out in the States, both Cochran and Vincent were still held in great esteem by their British Fans. Their Tour of Britain in those early Months of 1960 is still re -
- membered as a peak of Rock 'n' Roll History on these shores. Not only did Eddie's Act inspire a whole new Generation of budding Guitarists but it also had a profound
- effect on many already established Guitarists like Joe Brown and Big Jim Sullivan. It is also rumoured that a young " George Harrison " ( later Rhytm Guitarist on the
- famous british Beat - Group " The Beatles ") followed the Tour primarily to watch Eddie's Fingers handling that famous US " Gretsch 6120 " Half Resonanz - Guitar.
- By April 16th Gene and Eddie, with very few breaks, had been on the road together for the best Part of three Months. They were due to retum to the States for a
- well - earned rest before resuming the Tour in late April and May Following the Final Show at the Bristol Hippodrome their hire Car skidded on a freshty re - gravefted
- Road surface, hit a curb and spun into a concrete lamp - Standard. Eddie was thrawn through the root of the Car, receiving severe head injuries from which he never
- recovered - he died the ( Following Day, Easter Sunday 1960. Following Eddie Cochran's Death Liberty rush - reteased " Three Steps To Heaven' " which quickly Shot
- to the Top of the British Charts. By Way of using some of the back - Catalogue and re - issues Eddie's Name was kept alive in the British Charts for many Years to come.
- In Conclusion the Final Paragraph of an Article by William Bush in Guitar Player Magazine aptly summarises Eddie Cochran's achievement as one of the all -Time greats of
- the Rock 'n' Roll Era; The Years have neither dimmed Cochran's Memory nor diminished the importance of his contribution to Rock 'n Roll Music - had Cochran lived and
- never recorded another Note, he'd have done quite enough already !.
