Description

[DUE to a severe spell of stormy weather,  I am offering "re-runs" again this week.  I always take my record pictures outdoors in the bright sunshine, because my primitive daguerrotype camera just won't sharply focus under artificial light. Several weeks worth of new listings are in the bullpen, ready for their closeups, which I duly will shoot if there is a PEEP of sunlight in these coming winter days.]

HERE is a record of which I would really like to know the back story:  "FREILEKHS" by the STATE ENSEMBLE OF JEWISH FOLK MUSIC.

Recorded in the U.S.S.R. in 1938, possibly at gunpoint, this is the biggest Klezmer band I've ever heard.  VERY compelling, light-on-its-feet music despite the ponderous size of the ensemble. "Freilekhs" ("Fralich") is lively dance music, played by great musicians - especially the Tuba player! He really anchors the beat.

The flip side, "BIN ICH MIR A SCHNEIDERL" ("I Am a Tailor") is a plaintive song, performed by N. SHULMAN, accompanied at the piano by A. ZHAK.

In case there was any doubt, the proceedings are marked "Jew" on both sides of the label.

The Jews had it tough under the Russians, and then ten times tougher under the invading Nazis! I wonder if any of these fine musicians survived the war.

This record was made especially for and sold at the U.S.S.R. Pavillion at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

This original 1939 U.S.S.R. 7458 is in E- condition.  It was played with a fiber needle, which left traces at the bottom of the groove.  This doesn't harm it in playback, with a suitable modern stylus. (I use a 4.0-mil truncated elliptical).

The record was in the Folk Music collection of the late Howard Feldman, whose handwriting heavily inscribes the upper right hand corner of the sleeve.

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
