Original copy of this unbelievably beautiful English electric folk album by Frock on small private pressing label from 1978. It’s like Fuchsia or Fairport Convention only a hundred times better.
Every track has haunting, delicate female vocals with a deep symphonic feel from the band’s two violin players. The sold rhythm from bass and drums and woodwind recorder underline exactly why this LP is the absolute Holy Grail for collectors of rare and beautiful UK folk.
This copy has been in my ownership for many years, but now it’s time to let it go. I will be drip-feeding other long-lost and sought-after gems of Folk, Psych, Rock, and Jazz over the coming weeks, but thought I might as well start with a splash.
This album NEVER comes up for auction.
You won’t find any details about it at Popsike, and even many of the UK’s top dealers are still not turned on to its genius. One of the reasons for this is its intense scarcity. Only a handful of top collectors in the UK, US, and Japan have managed to get their hands on a copy of this true mythical gem.
But hey, don’t take my word for it.
Here’s a review from "Galactic Ramble" - the fullest study of the 60s and 70s UK music scene ever published:
“The pinnacle of electric folk albums – having sold for four-figure sums in the past – Silkie is also among the best. Bringing to mind Deirdre, Fairport Convention, Ragged Heroes, et al, the LP includes superb interpretations of traditional material like Blackleg Miner and Lovely Joan.
At the same time the band maintains its own identification – particularly through the use of two classically-trained violinists giving a symphonic edge to much of the material. Only 250 copies were ever pressed – four or five which have resurfaced on the collector’s market - with none remaining at the source.”

Condition Report:
Disc:
VG+ in appearance with a few small inaudible marks which does not affect sound quality. The vinyl is still glossy and plays superb throughout on a Linn LP12 with cartridge.
Label:
Totally clean, both sides. The simple blue printing on white background shows slight smudging on Side B which would have been done at time of printing. This is entirely normally normal for private pressings and adds to its authenticity. No spindle-wear - clearly a sign that this record has had very little use.
Cover:
VG- The cover has had some water or damp-related damage to one corner at some stage during its 30-year life. The result is slight deterioration of the front cover where the sleeve opens, with a 15mm piece missing from the rear. There is also minor discolouration close to the same corner and fading around edges. The cover itself is quite delicate and made of thin unbleached and untreated paper cardboard unlike regular glossy finish UK LP major-label covers.
