Description
The Societe Wilhelm Furtwangler of France celebrated the centenary of the great conductor, Wilhelm Furtwängler, with this 2 LP set containing rare concert recordings. SWF 8601 includes:
Furtwaengler conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in a LIVE concert from February 1944 of HAENDEL, Concerto grosso, Op. 6, Nr. 10 and MOZART, Symphony Nr. 39.
As filler is a rare studio recording of Furtwangler conducting the Vienna Philharmonic and soprano WIlma Lipp in 2 arias from MOZART's Magic Flute ("O Zitter nacht!" and "Der Hölle Rache"). Curiously while recorded in the studio this remained unissued until this release. It is one of the few times when Furtwangler was convinced to record a "bleeding chunk" of an opera, and I believe the only instance of an aria from Mozart. All other Mozart operas were recorded live and complete. Furtwangler performed from 1948-1954 at Salzburg including many Mozart operas in his repertoire including Die Zauberflöte .
SWF 8604 includes the music of Jan Sibelius, a composer not frequently heard in Furtwangler's concerts. This record documents a Sibelius concert from February 1944, with Furtwangler conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker in the tone poem EN SAGA, Op. 9 and the VIOLIN CONCERTO, Op. 47 with the great violinist, GEORG KULENKAMPFF. This is one of the very few live recordings that remain of Kulenkampff who died in an acciodent in 1948 and the only recording of the Sibelius.
Recorded by German Radio, probably on Magnetophon (the great German magnetic recording tape invention),
The two LPs appear unplayed with no marks or scuffs. There is shelf wear to the heavy sleeves. The gatefold albums include archival photographs as well as documentation of Furtwangler’s performances of Sibelius and a comparison of the timings of his other performance of the Mozart Sinfonie and Händel. Issued by for its members in August, 1987, in small quantities of less than 1000. These pressings far exceed any other LP and CD issues for sound, were DMM and pressed by Pathe Marconi.
