Description

Hello there, come on in and welcome to the auction!

As you can see from my 100% feedback, I sell with complete honesty and reliability.  Above all things I am a record collector and music lover.  I only sell records that I would want to receive. I know well the disappointment of receiving an over-graded record that turns up two weeks late.  That is not the service you will receive here, so bid with total confidence. I don’t sell a lot of records because I spend a lot of time carefully finding, grading and listing them and do not like to rush this process, as many sellers must do to be able to sell 100 records a week!

I am mostly a collector of old time music, pre-war blues and folk, so buy job-lots that often contain rare records that aren’t to my taste so to ebay they go!

(On that note, if you have any early American blues or folk to swap or sell, please get in touch!)

Anyway, enough of the chit chat and on to the record at hand…

Artist or Band: FAIRPORT CONVENTION

Album Title: Full House

Producer(s): Joe Boyd

TRACK LIST:

Side 1: Walk Awhile; Dirty Linen; Sloth.

Side 2: Sir Patrick Spens; Flatback Caper; Doctor of Physick; Flowers of the Forest.

Label/Format: Island - full pink format with matt finish and very gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Two intensely deep pink labels that are immediately striking to view. Both in supreme condition, clean, fresh and hugely attractively. Any spindle marks are very fine and faint as seen critically under angled light. The Philips pressed record plays beautifully throughout.

Cat Number: ILPS 9130

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very solid solid weight.

Country of Manufacture: England

Rarity: The first pink copies of this album are scarce and in fine, lightly played conditions quite rare. An album I have heard several times on the original pink format with crackle and pressing noises. Also prone and intolerant of old needle abuse and often is ruined by their effects. This copy looks and plays beautifully with barely anything unwanted and for a change too includes a really nice cover. Equally intolerant of heavy handling or poor storage this one is clean and still quite fresh and shows little of the usual wear on the heavily textured ‘Hessian’ type finish. Overall a very nice example to please many fans and collectors.

Original Year of Release: 1970

Matrix Nos: ILPS 9130 A 3 1 1 2 / ILPS 9130 B 3 1 1 6

Brief Artist & Album Info: The first post-Sandy Denny album was never going to be easy, but this excels again with more pure quality folk-rock. With Dave Swarbrick now a full member this seven track album is another Fairport classic and includes the wonderful lengthy track ‘Sloth’. Unfortunately this was to be Richard Thompson’s final album with the band before embarking on a solo career and his brilliant influence and songwriting skills were sorely missed after this album. This without doubt is one of the finest pink pressings I have seen or heard, devoid of the usual crackle and clipping so many seem to have. Even clean looking copies of this album can have issues, but few will be disappointed with this one

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT : an unlaminated gatefold format with a lovely textured finish on the front and back – sometimes referred to as the ‘Hessian’ cover. The inside is smooth, all is matt. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Group. Includes the polylined inner sleeve.
Cover Front: Minor small tip rubs, and little else really.  The lack of rubbing, creasing and sticker issues are all major pluses on a cover so prone to wear. These heavily textured covers, in most cases, use softer card that is very intolerant of just about anything time, handling and bad storage has to offer – that includes fading – which this has also avoided. A really attractive front that gives scant clues of age.
Cover Back: Very similar again and the lack of ring wear is a huge bonus. The top left titles are in gold on black – all is pristine.
Cover Inner Gatefold: The superb band picture is in wonderful condition with barely anything to fault.
Top Edges: A little patchy minute rubbing, both still straight, practically flush and flat.
Bottom Edges: Mainly light rubbing on the front, moderate near the left corner. Moderate and less patchy on the back.
Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light and mild as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.
Spine and Text: Solid, straight and thick with hardly any compression or discolouration – and certainly not faded as many orange spines tend to. Most of any rubbing near the ends with all text present and strong. Even the perilous folds have avoided rubbing which is quite unusual.
Corners: Very fine shape retained which is commendable for such a challenging cover

Cover Summary: An attractive stunning example of this very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find significantly better. This impressive and still quite fresh example should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: some light to moderate discolouration of the paper, this is date-coded 0670 (June 1970), so 46-years-old, but still in very fine condition. A Polydor polylined-style inner that has a little creasing, the lining clear as seen through two pristine window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:

EXCELLENT: hardly does this justice, and arguably better still. Under bright angled light ultra fine and faint, wispy surface marks are seen, totally harmless of course, this record plays superbly. Very clean with excellent shine and pressed on quite heavy vinyl, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. A really lovely looking (and sounding) record that has clearly been carefully and modestly played, this reiterated by impressive sound. Viewed in normal room light, this record almost reminds of new and should again please many collectors.

Sound Quality: Near Mint

This record even exceeds it’s very impressive looks and plays with lovely clean sound. I have often found this album disappointing with inherent crackle and even pressing noises. Finding one so lightly played and appearing little handled is always great news. This is very well pressed, has no tracking issues and plays very quietly, this being a first pressing made by Philips/Polydor for Island. A company that used a variety of companies to make their records, and some were certainly better than others. Thompson’s guitar chords are defined and sharp, even Swarbrick’s fiddle, always one of the most vulnerable to damage on vintage vinyl, is precise, focused and distortion free. This without any doubt has never been subjected to piledriver vintage stylus and this is immediately evident. Early Fairports were very special and always nice to offer a very fine, first issue pink example. This is a delicate pink album that merits strong recommendation

So there we have it.  The rarest and earliest presses of Fairport Conventions Masterpiece in truly stunning condition!!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
