Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This very rare LP from Akkord (D 05268-05269, pre-Melodiya Soviet pressing, GOST-56, yellow Akkord label, mono) features legendary pianist Samuel Feinberg in deeply expressive and relevatory performances of the first 8 Preludes & Fugues from Book I of J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier BWV 846-869, recorded in Moscow during the years 1958-1960. This is visionary Bach playing that can be spoken of in the same breath as those traversals of the WTC by Richter, Gould, Tureck, et al. In some ways, Feinberg is really in a class of his own.

Included are the following works:

Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in C Major BWV 846

Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in C minor  BWV 847

Prelude and Fugue No. 3 in C-sharp major BWV 848

Prelude and Fugue No. 4 in C-sharp minor  BWV 849

Prelude and Fugue No. 5 in D Major BWV 850

Prelude and Fugue No. 6 in D minor BWV 851

Prelude and Fugue No. 7 in E-flat major BWV 852

Prelude and Fugue No. 8 in E-flat minor BWV 853

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the ‘softcover’ jacket is POOR. There is a tear to the lower-right corner, as well as a 3” seamsplit to the lower edge, creasing, discoloration, a former price sticker to the front panel, chipping and general tattiness. Not a collector’s copy, but a passable one.

The condition of the LP is VERY GOOD. Visually, there are no spindle trails, though there is a tiny bit of writing to both labels. There are also some hairline marks to the vinyl, though no serious scratches. In terms of sound, there is light surface noise, as well as some scattered tics. Nonetheless, the sound has great presence and the beautifully veiled sonority that was Feinberg’s own shines through. If you need a MINT or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this is a good (and still more than enjoyable) collector’s copy.
