Description

This is the Fela Anikulapo Kuti Box Set 1, released in a limited edition in 1999 by Barclay France. These box sets feature digitally remastered re-releases of the original albums and are essential listening for fans of Afro Beat. It is now out of print and very sought after. It includes six of the best albums of Fela Kuti's prolific career: Open and Close (1971), Gentleman (1973), Upside Down (1976), Yellow Fever (1976), J.J.D. (Live at Kalakuta Republik, 1977), and I.T.T. (1980). These albums are raw, funky, inspired, and impassioned, taking their inspriation from both the Black Panthers and James Brown. They come in a thick, high-quality cardboard box, and it includes a large booklet (roughly 11 x 11") with color photographs, a one-sheet insert, and six color postcards on heavy cardstock depicting Fela's queens. The whole box weighs well over 4 lb., thus the slightly higher than normal shipping fees.

This set has been very well cared for. I purchased it new back when it was released and opened most of the albums, playing each one only once or twice at the very most. One album, I.T.T., is still sealed because I never got around to opening or listening to it. The vinyl, box, and all inserts are in near mint condition.

The first image shows the box cover and the first album. The second and third photos show the next four albums. The fourth photo shows the last album, which is sealed and the back of the box. The fifth photo shows the included booklet and postcards. The last photo pictures a one-sheet insert with the limited edition number. (This box is #5986.)
