redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome LP from Decca (LXT 2078, Spanish pressing, orange/gold label, mono) features the great violinist Christian Ferras in two inventive 20th Century concertos, one of which is a double concerto in which he is partnered with the splendid pianist Pierre Barbizet.

The exact details are as follows:

Joaquin Rodrigo: Concerto de estio for Violin and Orchestra

            Christian Ferras, violin

George Enescu conducting l’Orchestre de la Société du Conservatoire Paris

Ivan K. Semenoff: Double Concerto for Violin, Piano & Orchestra

            Christian Ferras, violin

            Pierre Barbizet, piano

Ivan K. Semenoff conducting l’Orchestre de la Société du Conservatoire Paris

Both works were recorded at La Maison de la Mutualité, Paris in October 1951 (producer: John Culshaw).

At BBC Music Magazine’s official website, one can find this review of a Testament CD (SBT 1307), which included both recordings:

“A pair of Testament releases feature recordings by French violinist christian ferras, originally made for Decca. One of them will surely appeal to those interested in the byways of the violin concerto literature. Joaquín Rodrigo’s dashing Concierto de estío is seldom recorded but is still far better known than two pieces written for Ferras, Ivan Semenoff’s Double Concerto for Violin and Piano (a mélange of serious aspirations and serious lapses of taste) and Federico Elizalde’s Violin Concerto (by turns evocative and exotic). Those recordings from 1947 and 1951 show their age, but the Brahms and Mozart recordings from 1954 are better preserved. Booklet annotator Tully Potter describes Ferras’s style as a combination of ‘glamorous tone and solid technical foundation’; he strikes me as tending toward a resolutely public manner that does not entirely preclude the possibility of either involvement or sensitive shading.”

There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in Spanish only. The striking cover design is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, discoloratoin, and aging, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, this is a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, the text on the label is a bit faded and there are some light non-sounding marks. In terms of sound, though there is occasional light surface noise, in general playback remains fine. However, those wanting a flawless or NM copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
