Description

Rare boxed set CASALS FESTIVAL AT PERPIGNAN

Limited First Edition by Columbia Masterworks, SL-170. - this is set number 821 of 2,000

I have recently been asked if this is a gold or blue label version.  The LPs all have gold labels.  I have never heard of the blue label and all of the first editions are gold label LPs to my knowledge.

A 13 (mono) LP set of works by Mozart and Beethoven.

Original box with pamphlet insert photographed by Gjon Mili.

The LP's and box are in like new condition.

Each LP is engraved "LIMITED EDITION," Nos. ML 4551 to ML 4562 plus a bonus LP. The bonus LP's cover is a photo of Casals conducting, and the LP itself contains works such as the Bach aria from Organ Pastorale in F with Casals on cello; Haydn Adagio from Sonata No. 9 in D Maj. for Piano (Casals/cello and Eugene Istomin/piano); a rehearsal of the Bach Allegro from Concerto in A minor (Isaac Stern/violin and Casals conducting the Prades Festival Orchestra.) Performers with Casals and the Perpignan Festival Orchestra include Paul Tortelier, Isaac Stern, William Primrose, Erica Morini, Marcel Tabuteau, Eugene Istomin, John Wummer, Dame Myra Hess, Rudolf Serkin, Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Alexander Schneider.

In addition to being the complete incredibly rare set in near mint condition, this set features several autographs:

The cover of the included booklet has been autographed by mezzo-soprano singer Jennie Tourel

The interior of the booklet has been autographed by Pablo Casals

LPs 4557 and 4560 have been autographed by Rudolph Serkin

Finally, in addition to all of the above, this listing will include a fair amount of ephemera which includes a number of newspaper clippings regarding the performers of this festival, as well as a San Francisco Symphony guide from April of 1967 which explains where the autographs of Mr. Serkin originated (see photo 12).

For as an amazing set as this is - near mint condition - there are unfortunately a few blemishes to disclose:

Original owner wrote his name, purchase date, and purchase price on the inside front cover of the box

Original owner stuck an address label to the front cover of the booklet

Front cover of the booklet has two small grease stains, one of which is visible on the inside of the front cover.

Please see photos for each of these defects.

Otherwise an amazing 60 year old box set in near mint condition.

A note to international buyers: I will only ship internationally through ebay's global shipping program.
