ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and rare LP from EMI (HQM 1079, English EMI pressing, black/silver Odeon label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features that great arisitocrat of the cello, Emmanual Feuermann in a tryptich of legendary performances from his all too slender discography. And this is arguably the finest pressing on LP that these remarkable recordings ever received.
Included are the following works:
Schubert: Sonata in A minor for Cello and Piano D. 821 "Arpeggione"
> rec. at EMI Studio No. 3, Abbey Road, London on 29 June 1937 with pianist Gerald Moore
Beethoven: Sonata No. 3 in A Major for Cello and Piano Op. 69
> rec. at EMI Studio No. 3, Abbey Road, London on 29 June 1937 with pianist Myra Hess
Weber: Andantino, from the Konzertstück in F minor Op. 79
> rec. at EMI Studio No. 3, Abbey Road, London on 29 June 1937 with pianist Gerald Moore
On the reverse of the jacket are reprinted tributes from conductors Otto Klemperer, George Szell, and William Steinberg, as well as from fellow cellist Joseph Schuster: “I had just come from Germany to continue my studies and Feuermann, who was not only a little older than myself, amazed me with his finished virtuosity. I thought I had never heard such great cello playing in my life. As a cellist Feuermann was in a class by himself. His great flair for the cello was something innate – something that he had with him from the beginning. As a man, Feuermann was the kindest, most magnanimous person I have ever known.”
London critic Annette Morreau has brought Feuermann to life in her superb biography of the cellist, and this record accomplishes much the same - performances which have sometimes been equaled, but never surpassed, and this presentation LP makes a handsome tribute to an extraordinary artist cruelly cut down at age 39. The transfers to LP were quite skillfully done, and well capture the remarkable purity of Feuermann’s beautiful tone and immaculate intonation.
Feuermann plays with astounding virtuosity and technical finish, yet not without warmth. These recordings are discographic landmarks and anyone who cares about the art of the cello will surely treasure these amazing musical and historical documents – stunning!
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping/wear at corners, more so to the lower-left corner, as well as some minor creasing and mild discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, this is a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is EXCELLENT++. Although the surfaces are not always completely CD silent, in general the playback is superb. Only those requiring an absolutely flawless copy need hesitate – overall, this rates as a fine collector's copy.
