This beautiful LP – a fine collector's copy – from RCA (LM-2400, US pressing, shaded dog label – 1S/1S stampers, mono) entitled "Ballet Music from the Opera" features conductor Anatole Fistoulari and l'Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire in a captivating program of ballet favorites, sumptuously recorded by Decca at La Maison de la Chimie, Paris, during 18-20 November 1958 and sounding splendid here (producer: Ray Minshull / engineer: Kenneth Wilkinson).

The exact contents are as follows:

Verdi: Dance of the Moorish Slaves, Grand Marche, Ballet, from Aida

Saint-Saëns: Bacchanale, from Samson et Dalila

Rossini: Pas de six [Act I] & Soldiers' Dance [Act III], from from William Tell

Moussorgsky (orch. Rimsky-Korsakov): Dance of the Persian Slaves, from Khovantchin

At the superb online retailer PrestoClassical, one can find the following notes about these recordings:

"Many famous conductors had unusual lives, but the life of Anatole Fistoulari (1907-1995) was more unusual than most. When he was just seven, he conducted a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony in his native city of Kiev. At thirteen, he conducted Saint-Saëns’s Samson and Delilah in Bucharest. While a young man, he travelled throughout Europe and North America, accompanying bass Feodor Chaliapin and conducting the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Escaping the European mainland in World War II, he came to England, where he soon married Gustav Mahler’s sole surviving daughter, Anna, and was named principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He became a British citizen in 1948. Under a reciprocal arrangement between Decca and RCA, the Verdi, Mussorgsky, Saint-Saëns and Rossini items – all ‘opera-ballets’ – first appeared on RCA in 1960. Their first Decca release (under the title ‘The World of Ballet’) was not until 1972. Likewise, the Lecocq and Walton items were published in 1959 by RCA but in 1971 by Decca."

And of an Australian Eloquence CD re-issue of these performances, the erudite editors of the Penguin Guide [2011 Edition] wrote:

"The pseudo-exotic elements of the Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah are invariably enjoyable, but rarely do they achieve the adrenaline level of this performance: Fistoulari whips up the end of the piece in a frenzy of excitement...A highly enjoyable and varied collection of ballet music."

There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Robert Lawrence, printed in English only. The extraordinary cover art was executed by Mozelle Thompson.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping at corners and mild shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
