Description
This auction is for an absolutely NM copy of Salvatore Accardo and the Orchestra Da Camera Italiana playing Paganini on the Fone label. This is one of an EXTREMELY limited pressing of only 496 copies made. Fone spared no expense in putting these on vinyl, issuing this record on 2 one-sided 12” 45s on 180gm Japanese vinyl in a one-stage pressing process. The purpose, by the way, of pressing this single-sided is to allow the stamper to press the imprint as deeply as possible without worrying about play-through from the other side. It's as close to the master tape as you're going to get. This whole series by Fone has gotten nothing but extreme raves from critics and audiophiles.
Michael Fremer explains this one-step process:
“Mr. Ricci, cut the lacquers on his own lathe using the original analog tape played back on the machine used to record it and produced the record using a “one-step” process....In the case of a single-step LP, the “father” itself is used as a stamper for a limited run, in this case being 496 copies. Why 496? It’s the eccentric (but lovable) Mr. Ricci’s favorite and/or lucky number. Ricci is also a winemaker. He limits his yearly output to 496 bottles as well. “

“The set of Paganini pieces performed by Mr. Accardo (playing a Stradavari Vesuvio 1727) back by the Orchestra Da Camera Italiana and recorded live to two-track Ampex ATR 100 on half-inch tape at 30IPS in Cremonaís Teatro Amilcare Ponchielli before a remarkably sniffle and cough-free audience, features sublime, weep-inducing sonics of such harmonic and textural purity, each bow sweep will induce gargantuan goose bumps. Though the sides are short (twelve and fourteen minutes), the sonic and musical pleasures are intense as the orchestra and particularly Mr. Accardo's violin, is presented with stunning transparency and three-dimensionality.”
I am the original owner of this set and played it exactly twice. The records are NM and as close to minty as you can get. I cleaned them with the Disc Doctor system and a Nitty Gritty Record Cleaning Machine. The two cover sleeves are also NM, very solid.
I am ordinarily a buyer of records more than I am a seller, and am conservative in my grading. If you feel that I have somehow misrepresented the record, I will try to make it right to you. I expect the same of others when I am a buyer.
